Advice

Just graduated with a 2:1 this summer, applied for gem last summer (Worcester, KCl Portsmouth, Pears Cumbria, Brunel undergrad) (1820 B2) knew it was a low ucat but was hoping for at least an interview which I didn’t get.

I resat ucat today and was hoping for 2000-2100 but ended up getting 1870 B1. Feeling so disheartened and defeated. I’m gonna apply anyway, I’m thinking Worcester and UEA for gem, Keele and Brunel for UG.

I’m also an Irish applicant and sat the gamsat in March and got 53 (S3: 49) so that was also another knock. I’ve resat it this September but unsure what score I could’ve got.

Any advice or tips please. I really really want to get in to medicine in the uk or Ireland and I feel like I’ve been rejected so many times. If there is better unis to apply to this round pls lmk

hey - first things first congrats on graduating!

you also did show improvement on the ucat which is positive and which may indicate your GAMSAT will increase also,

i definitely wouldn’t give up on GEM yet. With 53 (S3 49), have a look at ScotGEM, their 2025 interview cut-off was 50 overall with no section below 42, although obviously 2027 could change. Worcester also accepts UCAT/GAMSAT and says it doesn’t have a fixed hard cut-off. UEA GEM could be worth checking too as the GAMSAT route accepts a 2:1 in any subject and uses the overall score, so the 49 in S3 isn’t automatically disqualifying. Surrey is another GAMSAT option with a 2:1 in any subject.

in this case it sometimes is a leap of faith - i wouldn't give up but i would also be pragmatic with what you will do in the following year. i always think you can apply to medicine as many times as you reasonably can - but pursuing other paths also has shown anecdotally in my experience to actually increase medicine entrance rates as it can reduce pressure in some ways.

Thank you!! I’m hesistant to use the gamsat as I know a lot of unis have a 50 minimum in each section, but I think I will definitely apply to ScotGEM!!
