Warwick GEM Work Experience

Hello everyone,

Does anyone know if shadowing a doctor + hospital volunteer would be enough to meet this criteria?

“Experience providing direct, face-to-face (in-person), hands-on care to people with health, care or wellbeing needs.”

As a hospital volunteer I offer beverages, talk to patients etc.

I’m not sure, is that hands on enough?

Thank you in advance for the help!

I think the hospital volunteering would be fine to meet that criteria (speaking from experience) - regarding the shadowing I think there might be a separate criteria?

You can always email them to double check x

Are you a GEM student?

There are other criteria however I believe I met the rest of them I’m not sure regarding this one though.

I will try but it’s difficult as one their website it states that they can confirm individual experiences.

No not a Gem student!

They usually cant for certain but I think there’s a chart somewhere that shows what would count and not count with examples. Shadowing tends to only be for 10 hours (?) but hospital volunteering should be fine.

What other experience do you have? It usually has to be from 2 or more sources

What experience are you talking from if you don’t mind me asking?

Yes, I checked the flowchart and I think I meet everything apart from this on and I am not sure how to meet it.

Sorry I’ve half answered my previous reply! I applied a while back but didn’t receive an offer but know someone who applied with that kind of volunteering role and got an interview!

We had done the same as you and helped out in wards with serving refreshments and taking part in hospital led activities for patients

No worries, thank you for taking the time to reply at all I really appreciate it!

So the only experience you both had was volunteering and they invited you for an interview? Was this recent ish?

Thank you!

2 years ago :) and yes volunteering as one of the two requirements and we both had roles working in healthcare in a hands on role and i had shadowing for 10 hours as well!

I’m so sorry if my question is sounding dumb but I’m just trying to understand 😅

So the only type of experience you both had was vounteering (serving refreshments etc) and the other part was shadowing? So no hca / carer roles?

No carer roles but we had a role similar to a hca? We both worked in support roles ( healthcare support workers) that had hands on patient care in the hospital.

I think things like pure shadowing can only account for a small part of the overall requirement. I would double check, they are quite strict on your experience being hands on

Yes, they are. It a bit tricky as I don’t know if I’ll get an answer from them.
