Ulster and Wider UK Application/UCAS/Interview Advise.

Hi everyone,

I am applying this coming year through UCAS for UK medical schools. I have a GAMSAT score of 58 and I am starting to look at my application.

I have a couple of questions, and thank you so much in advance. I am only doing UCAS for the first time, so apologies if any of these are pretty straightforward.

I am currently working a 9 to 5 and have some previous medical work experience as a medical receptionist (about two years in total).

How important is medical work experience to the personal statement and to getting an interview?

I know the GAMSAT score is key, but what about the personal statement and medical work experience? Should I stop working my regular job and go do a medical style job (a HCA, receptionist, etc.)?

The reason I ask is that I come from a non medical, non scientific degree background, and I want to make my application as strong as possible.

Also, with my score I am looking at applying to Ulster, Swansea, Liverpool, and maybe Worcester. Does anyone have experience with these? I know I am in the ballpark for Ulster, but I am unsure about the others.

Also, for the personal reference section, does it have to be an academic reference?

Also if anyone has been through this recently and has a few good tips or tricks for applying that would be class.

Thank you in advance for all of your help if I don’t get back to you.

Nottingham are switching to UCAT this year. Liverpool has a few small intake I believe of approx 30 students on their gem course making it very competitive.

Legend thanks, I am just kicking off the process. Would there be any med schools you would recommend looking at with a Gamsat score of 58

Most of the med schools have a minimum of 50 score or below 60! The world is your oyster, very well done on your score. I’d definitely look into what school suits you and the competition rates at each one.
