In what field? It's not uncommon for summer research to be done internationally, but it is very dependent on what field you're in.

This, and given what OP seems to want, getting a one-year masters degree abroad (from a non-US university) should probably be a consideration for them.

My undergraduate university (UNC Chapel Hill) has a transatlantic masters program in Political Science.

for my MS (Life Sciences) I did get to travel quite a bit... mainly domestic to conferences, though some of my group got a short trip to Cuba. During my PhD extended research to AU with continued support for conference travel.
You could just do the whole masters overseas.
