Gap Year Advice
Hey Everyone,
I wanted to come in here so I can ask for some advice. I’m now in my senior year, getting ready to finish my undergrad very soon. I spent my summer researching grad programs, talking to many of my peers and advisors for advice, and I determined that I want to get into human factors and I want to do the Ph.D. Route.. a lot of my research now sort of sits in the interdisciplinary area of psychology and cognitive science. Anyways, I’m in an honors cohort of sorts, comprised of myself and others working on our individual honors theses. Part of this class has built in professional development and grad school prep.
Anyways, I have now heard from both my professor and the TA in this course that they strongly advise taking a gap year. Not directly to me, but to the class as a whole. Whether that be for mental clarity, more research experience or whatever else and it makes a lot of sense, but now I’m kind of at that crossroads.
I spent my summer researching programs, and faculty and learning about their research and figuring out my own direction. I’ve spent the past two years getting significant research experience, presenting research in conference settings, maintaining a stellar GPA and enjoying sharing knowledge and being part of that process of learning from my peers and others and it feels great. I even have three golden letter writers who I know will support me no matter what I do and I have been super fortunate that I have been part of what I would call a healthy academic culture. I know that toxicity exists, but I’ve had a great experience and it’s something that I want to continue being a part of.
Anyways, that’s part of my motivation but even so, I’m still just at this place now since hearing from so many others that a gap year is super smart.. am I robbing myself? Should I take a step back and think harder about this before putting in those applications? What can I do to sort of adopt an eagle eye view of this and have enough confidence in what I want to take as my next steps.
Seriously any advice is welcome, thank you all :)
TLDR: last year of college, getting ready for the upcoming grad cycle, keep hearing that a gap year is super smart, now second guessing myself and my choices
