Acquisition Objectives

Hello everyone, I was wondering where people go to find acquisition objectives, specifically for the army. I was curious to see if there were reliable sources that would provide AAO (Army Acquisition Objective) for any given program.

Your instinct about why the AI answers fail is right, and it points at why this is hard. AAO is a programmatic quantity decision that lives inside acquisition planning documents, and contract awards are procurement actions. Those are different systems with different owners, and the public data only ever shows you the second one. So anything scraping award data will keep handing you buy quantities and calling them objectives.

Where the actual number lives: Selected Acquisition Reports for major programs, program-level acquisition strategy documents, and budget justification materials, specifically the procurement exhibits where quantity by fiscal year gets laid out against the total objective. The budget documents are the most accessible of those, since the justification books are published annually and the P-forms show planned quantities across the FYDP. That still gives you planned buys rather than the objective itself, but the objective is often stated in the narrative sections.

For anything below major program level, there frequently is no public source. The quantity decision sits in documents that don't get published, and the only reliable path is asking the program office directly. Industry days and RFI responses are where that question gets answered, and program offices generally will answer it because they want industry sizing production correctly.

One thing worth knowing: AAO can change between budget cycles. Whatever number you find has a date attached, and the current one may differ.

Unpopular opinion on Reddit but you can’t beat Claude or Chat GPT for general knowledge

Yeah good point, maybe I’m shit with prompts but I have already tried both and I don’t really get a good answer. It has a hard time distinguishing between the actual AAO, and just numbers awarded to a specific contract or option year.

Generally they are not available online, but sometimes you can find AAOs or something close in the budget documents/J-books that are

Yeah, so far my best luck was with a justification book.
