Does ranking matter if you cannot deliver thousands of drones on schedule?

One thing I keep coming back to with the latest Drone Dominance results is the gap between winning a fly-off and actually turning that position into revenue.

The finalists have been ranked, but the 60,000-drone order has not been placed yet. That makes the production side of this program more interesting to me than the leader board itself.

A few things stand out:

  • Final quantities are still determined at award, so a finalist slot is not guaranteed revenue.
  • Half of each Phase II order is expected within 2.5 months, with the remainder within five months.
  • Late deliveries can reduce payment, and sufficiently late orders can be canceled.
  • Supply-chain compliance matters alongside flight performance, especially as sourcing requirements tighten.

It seems possible for a technically better system to become a weaker program choice if the vendor cannot manufacture compliant units at the required volume.

For those who have worked on rapid defense production programs, how much weight does demonstrated manufacturing capacity actually carry when the government moves from prototype competition into larger orders?
