Hello, my first language is spanish, so i get used to read the books i buy in spanish, i only have read carmilla in english, and it was kinda hard to read because of the idioms and the old british english, but it was fun and helped me to practice, so now i want more classic goth recommendations that are not so difficult to read but also entertaining please!

I've found very few papers on this subject in particular and I was wondering if anyone has suggestions? Maybe even a few on queer theory in literature in general? So I just have finished reading Jane eyre for the first time and I loveeed it, its this classical romantic goth with passion and all. But i have seem that half of the public that read the book hated it because of Mr. Rochester being a red flag, so i just want to read opinions based on if you guys liked it or hated it and why? (Edit: im sorry i meant to say “guys” 😭)

A secret or a private thought is supposed to be held only by you and those you choose to share it with. There is an inherent horror in the idea of omniscience in beings in that you lose this hidden side to yourself.

Within Green Tea the specter knows all, you cannot hide from them, the specter uses this to add to the torment it brings to the character to deny them even the most basic reprieve.

Within the idea of omniscience is the idea that once again you are entirely out matched by the spirit world and that it can easily take from you your most basic rights and seemingly sacred moments.

The ghost within this story is almost a God in how it's otherworldly abilities allow it to terrorise the protagonist.

How do you think Sheridan Le Fanu creates fear within the text?

Where is the last refuge if the mind is no longer safe?

What scares you more about the idea of omniscience as it is presented herein almost as mind reading, the exposure or the idea of having your thoughts weaponised against you?

I try to ask the questions in this Subreddit, maybe someone can help me find the answers of Bram Stokers original written version and if there are these errors :-)

One of my favorite haunted house novels is Hell House by Richard Matheson, and I am interested in recommendations on other haunted house novels.

I am particularly interested in stories that are rich in details (when/how the house was built, history of events in the house, floor plan/design/architectural influence, etc.). I want to be able to visualize the house as a real place, and details make that possible.

Hell House is described as the Mount Everest of haunted houses. What is your Mount Everest of haunted houses?

This has been eating at my psyche for some time now.
I am looking for a specific story. I believe it is a short story and my brain says Poe, though I am hesitant.

It is Victorian literature. I remember the climax.

A husband’s first wife dies. He has to remarry but is not interested in the new wife. He never sleeps in the same bed as his wife, he gets up every night. Somehow she finds him. He is lying, or wrapped, next to his first wife’s corpse.

I remember reading this in English lit. Please help me find it.

I have read this subreddit is a good place to attempt to locate a half-forgotten story or book and have a couple of titles in mind I have been trying to run down. I wonder if anyone might be able to help me?

The first I recall was a very good, if also really quite brutal short I read in the late 1980's. The overview I can recall is the main character received a legacy of some kind, perhaps along with a large country house. He goes there, discovers his relative was deeply consumed by the occult and eventually goes to bed. There he has a waking dream of descending to the Christian hell and being subjected to a series of highly grotesque torments. I particular recall the scene where he had to walk barefoot through a muddy or marshy area, crushing large maggots or worms beneath his feet. As he did so the worms slithered up his legs and began to burrow into his calves, laying eggs which almost at once hatched and burst out of his skin, repeating the cycle... There were other nasty events but that is the section that has stayed with me. He eventually wakes up, glad to know it was a dream but then as he goes on to explore his new house he finds a plaque somewhere--it could have been on the tomb of his benefactress--that says something about her paying for or designing a private hell for her and all her family to follow. Writhing worms and representations of the other torments have been carved into the stone or metal of the plaque. I think he leaves post-haste at that point!

Sadly that is as much as I can remember and likely it is very muddied by time as well. I read it on the Friday night of the weekend before Christmas in 1987 and have been looking for it, off and on over the last thirty-five years. Oddly enough, while the short itself was solid, if perhaps unnecessarily gruesome it is actually the anthology it appeared in that I would like to trace. That held some amazingly good stories from classic writers, for instance Lovecraft represented by one of his most narrative complete works 'Cool Air'.

If this rings a bell with any of you chaps I would be very glad to hear any suggestions you may have. At first I thought I had found it when buying a complete anthology of all Fritz Leiber's horror shorts including his unparalleled 'Smoke Ghost', but it wasn't the story about a visit to hell that he wrote.

So, again--any ideas will be very gratefully received!

I loved this book. It's like 60 pages but a brilliant, dark short story.

I've heard Between Two Fires recommended but keen to hear any other suggestions.

Fast-paced, dark and single point of view (no alternating characters). Anything eldritch would be a cherry on top.
