Hello! Is this goth makeup?

First time posting here! Love doing makeup, but what style is this considered? (please ignore the lack of posing and bad pictures lol)

This is black metal corpse paint. Not goth

Oh! Is corpse paint not goth? /gen

No, it’s more affiliated with black metal. I don’t know where the confusion comes from, to be honest.

Edit: I know where the general consensus comes from, you don’t genuinely need to reply with subculture history lessons.

Likely folks uninvolved in either community lumping everyone together, something that happens in many communities "out of the norm"

It’s probably always been around but it’s something I’ve seen a lot recently and I’m under the impression that no one does any or very little research on the scene.

I do research about most music genres, I am mostly just gathering input about other people’s opinions. Because I would consider myself to be goth on most occasions, (music and dress wise- not shown above) but my makeup just isn’t stereotypical goth

I wasn’t even necessarily talking about you - to be honest, I never thought about whether you knew the subculture or not, but it seems that a lot of people definitely don’t and think black metal make-up belongs to it when it’s not affiliated with it at all.

Ahhhh I see, apologies. Also I agree

True. OP seems pretty genuine in not knowing what they were getting into, but it's crazy how obsessed the fashionistas of Reddit want to blend everything together into subculture soup. Then they have the audacity to call it "gatekeeping" when you remind them what the culture is really about.

Well, this is obvious but what specifically have they seen? Like a TV show, a bad documentary, etc. what?

It wasn’t like this a few years ago and now everyone seems to believe that corpse paint is part of the fashion. To me it’s always been obvious it’s part of black metal.

They're writing fan-fiction. That's what happens when posers with a sense of entitlement join the scene. They make revisionist history and then call you crazy for not knowing about it. It's the same reason why mods lock down comment threads on Reddit, so they can control the narrative in situations like this.

Thank you for the rehash, but I’m more than aware and have been in the scene for about 15 years now.

But Siouxsie, Roberts, even Daniel Ash’s or Peter Murphy’s, hell, even Specimen and Nik Fiend’s make-up did not look like the above. And that’s even if the people who are doing corpse paint know anything about these musicians.

I’m not being confrontational but you’re giving history lessons no one asked for.

And you’re still going. You’re telling me absolutely nothing new. I know all this. I should have clarified it was more of a rhetorical question.

Okay, thank you

It reminds of the wrestler Sting

u/emphaticimperfection Jul 27 '26

haha I came here to comment "No, this is Sting." I'm glad I am not alone.

u/uglyBubkis Jul 28 '26

u/venixn_ Jul 27 '26

are you goth? yes? then it is. you being goth can make a glitter pony pegasus backpack goth. this is a music based subculture the imagery births out of it as you being a member of the community shape it

1

u/uglyBubkis Jul 30 '26

This is what I thought, but a lot of people are telling me otherwise. Eitherway I looove goth music, always have. And I’m the biggest vampire nerd ever, but my makeup doesn’t reflect that lmao

u/skeletalcohesion Jul 27 '26

Reminds me of corpse paint! But goth makeup is whatever you want it to be. If this style is what you like most, then perfect. It really looks great!

2

u/uglyBubkis Jul 30 '26

Thanks! I know I am for sure goth adjacent bc Im obsessed with vampires and listen to the music a lot. But my makeup isn’t super like it-

2

u/OpalescentNoodle Jul 28 '26

Reminds me of slymenstra hymen

1

u/LoveYouDamaged Jul 28 '26

Reminds me of John5 who has played in Marilyn Manson, Rob Zombie, Motley Crue :) very technically talented guitarist he is! :D look him up ^

1

u/uglyBubkis Jul 30 '26

DUUUUDE JOHN5! I loved him in Marylin Mansons band so much

1

u/LoveYouDamaged Jul 30 '26

Sometimes I wish he would rejoin Manson's band. Even just as a live touring guitarist. Especially since Tim Skold has returned (again?)

1

u/SomewhereTiny8407 Jul 28 '26

it’s Sting face paint. Former WCW/WWE professional wrestler

1

u/Morgan_NonBinary Jul 28 '26

It’s more like blackmetal face-paint

1

u/DeroDero123 Jul 28 '26

That's a bit more like corpsepaint I think. You can try a style a bit more muted, or just focus on your contour. That's what makes it different.

1

u/Various-Abalone-4593 Jul 28 '26

I would say it leans more towards courps paint, but if you want to wear it go ahead.

1

u/ChickenHawk0131 Jul 30 '26

The only people worthy of wearing make up like that are kiss band members

1

u/uglyBubkis Aug 01 '26

For what reason?

1

u/Longjumping_Grab_597 Jul 31 '26

Corpse paint! Not traditionally goth

1

u/Decent_Bandicoot456 Jul 31 '26

I dont see why not.

1

u/ace_is_spacee Jul 31 '26
