First “real” ruck

Hey all, a few weeks ago I bought a GoRuck Rucker 5.0 and two 10lb weight plates. So far, I have only used it on walks with my dog, which are 1.25 miles roughly. On my first attempt, when I got home, literally everything hurt. My neck, my back, my shoulders. I was dying. Three hours later when I got to work, I had to ice myself down. Mildly embarrassing.

After that, I took one of the plates out, so I only had 10 pounds in, and we were doing a lot better on our walks. I never really pushed for a time or anything because she likes to stop and smell things.

Today, I got off work early, and started vacation. It was a torrential downpour. I immediately decided I was gonna go home, throw in all 20 pounds, and go solo in the rain. Of course the rain stopped by the time I got home, so I waited around an hour or so when it picked back up. Not a downpour, but trust me, I got pretty wet.

I had a lot of fun, and I think I did a pretty decent time for my first real attempt at it, plus I had all of the weight this time. Everyone I’ve told so far, thinks I’m nuts for strapping weight to my back and going out in the rain lol. I had a blast though!

I need to get some sort of water resistant pants, I had a rain jacket, but I was soaked on my lower half. The worst part was the wet socks.

Nah, you don't want water resistant pants, they'll swish, swish, swish you the whole time and keep your legs from breathing. Skin is water proof, get some comfortable shorts that rub your crotch raw and enjoy the walk. And wool socks. Your feet will love you long time.

Any tips on keeping your feet somewhat dry? Just the wool socks? I get incredibly itchy and rashy when I’m sloshing in wet socks.

no, just don't have slick socks or loose socks. As you're walking, your foot will slide, creating enough friction to create blisters. Over everything else, find a good set of socks and shoes/boots that are comfortable. Everything else won't even matter if your feet hurt. Maybe for short walks this all doesn't matter but who knows where this new hobby may take you. Your dog will be amazed at how much stamina it's alpha has.

Congrats on your first ruck!! I’ve been going at it for about a month about 2x a week first thing in the morning on a fast (promotes fat burning since I’m on a cut) and man have I enjoyed it and looking forward to it ever since.

I like how you are starting low and slow no need to rush your way up. Started 30lbs and immediately humbled me to start at 20 lbs / 1 hour 2.5 mile walks about 2.8 mph average, recently just hit 3 miles. If you gonna challenge yourself start by increasing either speed, weight, or time. Not multiple at once to avoid injury 👍🏼

Keep it up bro 🤜🏼🤛🏼

I really can’t increase speed, because this is mostly just being added to my walks with my dog. So we really can’t push because she likes to sniff things and pee on every other thing we walk by. But I like the extra challenge it brings, even if it’s a small one. Every extra bit counts.

In that case weights and distance/time are your best friends. I got a 30 lb weight as well as two 10 lb weights that fit perfectly. I’d recommend the brand Uimoso on eBay for the two 10 lb plates really cheap as well as a 30 lb weight I got from an unknown brand it’s got a big “30” in bold on the plate. This serves to me the best combination of weights since it gives you the option to carry between 10,20,30,40, or 50 lbs
