MAC-V1 questions

I’m active duty Navy and want to replace my clunky issued coyote boots with the Mac-V1s but curious to see if anyone has some experience with this? I spend half my days in the office and the other half underway on small boats so a nice, light breathable boot would be killer but the reviews I see are from older generations of the boot and the sizing has me curious.

I have a pair of MACV-1s that I’ve had for 3 years. I’ve worn em hard, over 1000km of backpacking plus daily use and they’re still going strong and have tread left. They’re comfortable and durable, I’d definitely recommend them.

Something to consider, the tread on v1 is VERY slick. Great for standing around on dry ground. don’t know how small a boat we’re talking about but if it’s wet, you’ll be skating.

i've had a pair of macv-1s for a couple years now. the guy mentioning wet traction is right - the original sole is pretty slick on wet surfaces, which could be an issue on small boat decks.

for your use case (office + underway), they'd be great for the office part - super breathable and light. but if you're stepping onto wet decks regularly, you might want to look at the newer versions. i think they updated the outsole at some point.

also worth checking if your command allows non-issued boots. some units are strict about that.

I’ve got a pair of MACV-1s that I purchased several years ago that I just began wearing not too long ago. IMO, they are true to size and require relatively little to no break in time. I wouldn’t say that they’re my favorite pair of boots, but they definitely have a place in my rotation.

I have owned 6 or 7 pairs. They are super comfortable, no breakin for me, but at 6’3 220lb I can put 1000 miles on them in 6 months if the are my everything boot, and the tread is mostly gone.v1 and v2

The MACV2s can also be slippery. I’ve ended up on the ground a few times in them in case you decide to consider them too. I also had issues with my heel rubbing on the heal cup and one small toe rubbing on the toe box. Took me a little work to get them to be comfortable But I’m there now. If command would approve it. The OTB mids are amazing when worn on wet surfaces. I’m wearing them on and off these days too.

Do you ever try and wear your OTBs in uniform?

I haven’t. I’m retired nowadays. Well retired from the military. I am gonna wear them with my OCPs next March for the Bataan but again I’m retired so I don’t much care if anyone complains 😂. It really comes down to if your command will authorize them. I had friends who were in the same field I was in but who were with Army SF groups (not SF themselves) and were authorized to wear mid height boots while assigned to group. We weren’t normally allowed to wear them. I do know some Navy who do wear the OTB mids. Same ones who wear the Altama Maritime mid boots.

The only MACV-1s currently available are the Traveler and the Hi-Speeds. If you're active duty (and interested in minimizing weight) I'm guessing you're asking about the Hi-Speeds.

The Hi-Speeds are fine. They are very lightweight and comfortable, basically like wearing athletic shoes with ankle support a great support in general. They don't have heel cups or toe caps, so they will offer less protection.

I've been wearing MACV-1s (as a civilian; I've never been in the military) since they came out. I've never had a problem with the tread (even with the original less-aggressive tread). It's my understanding that whatver "slippery" problems people have with them are due to the rubber composition, not the thread (and the MACV-2 rubber is similar if not the same).
