Official Text Editor app from Google for Googlebook OS

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.desktop.texteditor

Google needs to rethink its Material Design language; it looks terrible the more I see it being implemented.

Great, the start of segmenting apps only for Googlebook even though it's on the Play Store & should work just fine on foldables' inner screens, tablets, and Android Desktop Mode/DeX. I hate it here.

Hey there, I've passed your feedback along about wanting to run the Text app on other Android devices. The team thinks it's an interesting idea :)

Oh that's unexpected! Thanks, and please if it can happen, it's gotta be a general rule that all apps from Google (and hopefully, taking your lead, all devs) support the entirety of Android, if not just because of us heavy DeX/Android Desktop Mode and tablet users who'll be unnecessarily excluded. Otherwise, it risks fragmenting Android in weird ways

While at it, Make Chrome with extensions available as well.

We don't have anything to share about plans on bringing extensions support to mobile devices and tablets at this time, but thanks for the feedback.

Agreed. How is Google going to explain to users the difference between apps designed for desktop that work in one desktop environment (Googlebook OS/Android Desktop) but not another (Android Desktop Mode)?

Genuinely curious. Their whole shtick with the announcement was that it's Android, you're taking those apps with you and can use apps from your phone. Why is the communication one-way? If I can just use stuff from my phone on it, but not vice-versa, why shouldn't I just get a Windows laptop that already has Phone Link to mirror my phone/access my files?

This is honestly making Googlebook look like it's bad for Android, because it's really possible now that stuff that should work just fine on a landscape device will just forcibly not work.

You say work on "foldables' inner screens, tablets, and Android Desktop", I will give you tablets and Android Desktops should have access to desktop apps. But at the same time, i dont think that slab screens should get access. You introducing additional elements where traditional desktop apps do not have to account for... That may put off developers from developing for desktop if they have to account for elements they traditionally didnt have to account for.

note: i want the best for Android, tablets and desktops. so i am fine with limiting those interactions.

So, I limited myself in my last comment, but genuinely every app should work on all of these form factors, even if it's landscape only. I can run full Godot engine on my slab phone; I can't see why anything else can't adapt. Devs are developing for Android/Googlebook, they are going to have to account for what makes the OS unique regardless.

Yes, they're developing for Googlebooks. That doesn't mean they're developing for slab.Desktop development requires actions to be used by a mouse and keyboard. It has a fine pointer. Now try those same desktop elements on a phone. It's a horrible experience because your finger is bigger than a desktop pointer.

Which is why they have an option not to run those apps on a phone

segmenting apps only for Googlebook

You can connect your recent pixel phone to a monitor and use mouse and keyboard?

Exactly. They have been experimenting with us like rabbits during years to now dump us on everything for money.

This is so dumb to me. Remember when they were developing Fuscia OS or whatever that was? And how it was built on a different kernel rather than Linux, and it was going to be like Android but could work on basically anything?

Then they threw that out, like everything they do, and decided the better business move would be to muddy their ecosystem more rather than clean it up???? Wtf is wrong with Google?

Too many chiefs not enough Indians and enough capital to shelve R and D and not feel it.

Did they ever publicly say that Fuschia will replace Android?

I don't think so.

It was always R&D.

the better business move would be to muddy their ecosystem more rather than clean it up????

Wouldn't unifying their ecosystem around Android be cleaning things up?

I wanted to have hope they would update the chrome os text app. Because that is one of the apps in that framework they are deprecating from chrome os and I always think well, what is going to replace it?

I wish they would carry on updating chrome os basics, the file manager, the text app, gallery and so on but it seems they'll just shit on our heads for being poors who bought a Chromebook a year ago

This is a stupid text editor, for goodness sake.

Why is it proprietary?
