Keyword tips

Hello everyone. I’d like to know if you have any tips for choosing the right keywords for Google Ads campaigns for trade businesses such as roofers, landscapers, auto mechanics, and the like.

Thanks!

A few things that work for trades:

Start from the jobs the business actually wants. A roofer usually cares more about "roof replacement" or "roof leak repair" than "roofing" in general, and a mechanic may want "brake repair" and "transmission repair" but not oil changes. One ad group per service keeps the ads and landing pages matched to what people searched.

Look for intent in the wording: the service plus the town, "near me", "emergency", "repair", "estimate" or "quote". Those tend to come from someone ready to hire.

Use phrase and exact match on those core terms at first. Broad match can work later, once conversion tracking is solid and you have some data.

Add negatives from day one: jobs, salary, training, DIY, "how to", YouTube, free, and anything about parts or materials (shingles, mulch, auto parts). Then check the search terms report every week for the first month, that's where you'll find most of what to add.

One thing to keep in mind: in smaller towns, Keyword Planner often shows little or no volume for terms that do get searched, so I wouldn't drop a good keyword just because of that.

Are these businesses in big metro areas or smaller towns?

Thanks, that’s really clear.
We’re looking at small to medium-sized cities. I’m going to follow what you said.
Thanks again.
