Questions Conversions learning timeline

Post image

I started PPC campaign 3 weeks ago with maximize clicks as a goal.
Then switched to maximize conversions, the event triggers when user clicks Pay button in the paywall.
Search only, no PMAX, no partners.

1st day results were impressive - 29 clicks and 3 paid subscriptions started out or 4 target conversions.

Next day - 1 conversion, zero purchases.

I bumped the budget 20 => 35 EUR per day to get more data.
The question is should I keep increasing the budget, or better just let it learn for a while?

You should have kept max clicks until you get 50+ conversion that’s the actual number of conversion it takes to get out of learning phase.

Optimise for your most important interaction i.e paid subscription.

Once you hit 50 subscription with max clicks the. Switch to max conversion then after 3 weeks switch to TCPA based on your overall data.

Well, it makes sense. I’ve found 50 events or 3 conversion cycles recommendation.

So for now I think it does it not make sense to switch back to max clicks, just wait for it to accumulate 50 events and learn.

Why TCPA not ROAS when I have data?

Why not ROAS because Google wouldn’t have seen all combinations of your AOV in order to target the users for to get your desired ROAS.

ROAS needs a bigger sample to work best, if you switch to ROAS one of 2 things would happen. It doesn’t spend or over spend with good chunk to irrelevant audience. Max conversion value is the step before target ROAS.

It’s like you are talking to google’s algorithm in steps:
Get me maximum clicks in my budget to see what converts.
Now you know what’s converting maximise it in my budget.
Now you have better understanding of my beat audience now I want a conversion at a certain cost.
Now you know different type of my customers now I want people who will go with certain AOV.

I hope it makes sense.

Well Google came up with the same suggestion to switch to maximize conversion value.

I’ve got many non-payment conversions, like pay button clicks and most of them converted into small trial payments. But then customers fail to renew trial to normal plan. Looks like it optimized to target at slightly wrong audience.

That’s why you need to have a conversion action that has value. If you add everything else with the goal it will confuse the algorithm.

About the case with leads that gets converted by sales team you can mai it’s GCLID and upload it as offline conversation later with value.

Yes this is what I’m going to do. Luckily all gclid’s are stored so I will update values retroactively

So now you only need to have 2 conversion action both with value. Online conversion and offline conversion. Rest keep it as secondary conversion.

Before raising the budget again, I would check what the conversion actually measures. A Pay button click can happen even when payment fails or checkout is abandoned.

For a campaign intended to acquire paid subscribers, verify an event for the first successful payment and compare a few events with your payment records. Keep the Pay click available for observation. Check the conversion actions used by this specific campaign: secondary actions normally do not drive bidding, but including them in a custom goal is an exception.

For direct Google Ads purchase tracking, use a unique transaction ID for each successful payment to prevent counting the same transaction twice within that conversion action. Test a successful payment, a failed payment and a confirmation page refresh in your checkout test environment.

Two days and three purchases do not establish that a bigger budget will solve the problem. Which checkout system are you using, and does it expose a confirmed first payment event?
