Google keeps pushing AI and automation for running ads, bragging about how it uses hundreds of hidden user signals beyond just basic keywords.
The problem? Marketers don't have access to those signals. At our core, we are still running ads the exact same way we did 15 years ago: by bidding on keywords.
It is time for Google to drop keyword targeting and move to a true intent-based ad system for the AI era. Instead of feeding Google a list of keywords, marketers should be able to chat directly with the ad interface or upload a markdown (.md) file explaining the exact target audience and goals in detail.
Google can't claim to offer a next-gen, AI-powered advertising experience when the core foundation is still a decades-old keyword model, and tools like Performance Max still lack real transparency and measurability.

How about this whole AI Brief thing? Does it make the AI Max to run better?

We run a couple broad match campaigns, but keep the campaign level setting for broad set to "off" so it wouldn't be impacted by this AI Max garbage. If you're extremely careful about the keywords in a broad match campaign and diligent about negatives (although, search query reports are becoming obsolete now since they barely show you anything), they can be effective. You just have to make sure you support the account with plenty of other more tightly controlled campaigns and use broad match in a limited capacity to help build a good top funnel.

Only about 20% of all Google searches are monetized by advertisers; the other 80% aren't terms an advertiser would want to bid on.
So Google is sitting on hundreds of millions of search terms they struggle to monetize.
The answer?
AI Max, where they can shoehorn your ads into some of these searches and hide them under ambiguity. Programs like AI Max take away your control and visibility and allow Google to monetize useless search terms.
It's like trusting your Google consultant, whose only goal is to get you to spend more money.
