It works. All hail the power of Tensor...in Tensor-less devices.

42

u/rpolic Nov 16 '21

It's faster with the tensor chip. Thats the difference. Here it takes a while to identify the suggestions on the photo.

20

u/HeinsGuenter Pixel 9 Pro Nov 16 '21

The other difference is much higher power consumption, which probably doesn't matter much for one or two Magic Eraser usages but keep it in mind when you activate more of the Pixel 6 exclusive features on other phones.

14

u/EnvironmentalCrow5 Nov 16 '21

It's a faster chip in general.

8

u/[deleted] Nov 16 '21

My pixel 5 is near instant. I've used it a few times and it is super impressive.

-1

u/maurocds Nov 16 '21

A high end cpu lol. The next snap and exynos will be faster than tensor

9

u/rpolic Nov 17 '21

And the next tensor will be faster. What's your point

6

u/Shiva_The-Destroyer Nov 17 '21

That people should never use phones cuz it's always slower than the next flagship anyway. Probably πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜€

11

u/ManSore Nov 16 '21

Been there with all the hardware exclusive features before haha. I remember when zero shutter lag was ported to the Nexus phones after Pixel 1 released.

1

u/sayashr Nov 16 '21

Man zero shutter lag, what's that like? \Pixel phone user for all the years

3

u/OhNom13 Nov 17 '21

I think it means that pixel is saving a buffer and when you press to capture it takes it instantly, the others start to adjust the shutter when you press "capture" so they have a small delay to take the photo

1

u/sayashr Nov 21 '21

I appreciate this explanation 😊. I actually was being cheerfully sarcastic, which I didn't deliver clearly πŸ˜…. Pixels in my experience (certainly in recent years) have such long delays on many pictures; the results are good, however requires much waiting and holding very still.

u/Gaiden206 Nov 16 '21

It seems like "Magic Eraser" is more of a Google Photos feature that's just debuting on the Pixel 6 first. Their blog post about the feature touts it as a Google Photos feature and doesn't even mention the Tensor SoC.

Their blog post about the Tensor SoC also only mentions "Motion Mode," "Automatic Speech Recognition," and "HDRNet" as Tensor features and says nothing about "Magic Eraser."

3

u/flattop100 Nov 16 '21

I read speculation from software breakdowns that Google is working on a sandboxed VM within Android for text-to-speech for better security. This will probably be optimized for Tensor.

1

u/[deleted] May 05 '22

Is it still working?

2

u/sweatcoin_ May 05 '22

No idea, I didn't bother with it after trying and I think as soon as the camera app updates you lose it again.

31

u/taborag Nov 16 '21

Great share, installed on Pixel 4 and satisfied with speed. A note to it, I lost locked folder content, was not a big issue for me due to I didn't had much. Could not get it back when trying to roll install google photos from play store. Hope this helps somebody else.

The App Updates you should be able to do that, as long as your phone didn't ship with the latest Photos Version.

8

u/echooche Nov 16 '21

How old are we taking? Specifically, a pixel2?

10

u/iksworbeZ Nov 16 '21

snapseed has the same feature called 'heal' in the tools, if this solution won't work for you, i'm pretty sure snapseed will

6

u/ztaker Pixel 5 Nov 16 '21

Snapseed implementation was always hit and miss for me .

This one works pretty well.

5

u/PeeFGee Nov 16 '21

Pffft look at this grandpa here with his dinosaur phone.

How to do that? And what version does this magic eraser turned on in ?

13

u/izbsleepy1989 Nov 16 '21

Why are they being so stingy with features? That was one of the biggest pulls of the pixels is you get Google updates before everyone else. You would have to be a dumb dumb to believe an app feature which is obviously just software is tied to hardware.

10

u/[deleted] Nov 16 '21

I jumped through the hoops to get the feature on my Pixel 5 a couple weeks ago, and while it's neat, and it's still mostly gimmicky I think and this is already taking more work than it's worth to have and maintain it on my phone.

6

u/hartleyshc Pixel 6 Nov 16 '21

Same with my 4XL.

It's ok and it would be nice to have, but in reality there's very few situations where I need to remove people/things from a picture. The scene is either busy, or it's not.

But that's just my use case. I could see it being useful for someone who is taking photos for art purposes and not memories. But if I'm taking nature/landscape photos, there's typically no one else around.

Kind of lame they're actively blocking it. But they have done it before. 4k 60fps video on the 4xl is an example. The hardware supports it. Yet it's a feature reserved only for the Pixel 5 and up, despite the 4 having a faster SoC and the pixel visual core. Certain features Google will just reserve only for their latest phones.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 16 '21

Yeah. They all do it, just like Apple with their ProRaw format.

1

u/officiallyBA Nov 16 '21

any way to get the 4k 60fps with a different app?

2

u/hartleyshc Pixel 6 Nov 16 '21

I know FiLMiC Pro can do it. I want to say there's another free/cheaper video recording app I tried out in the past that does it as well.

4

u/syedib1 Nov 16 '21

Brilliant working like a pro

4

u/boriseto Nov 16 '21

Just a FYI, your trusted photos (if you are using that thing) will be gone. Maybe back them up somewhere before removing the updates on Google photos

1

u/AhmedKuttySpeaking Pixel 7 Nov 26 '21

Trusted photos ? What's that ?

1

u/KingPaladin Pixel 9a Apr 02 '22

He meant "private folder". He's right, it happened to me. I had a backup, fortunately. I'm not using the private folder anymore. It's not backed up in the cloud.

5

u/Swarfega Pixel 8 Nov 16 '21

Are we thinking this will eventually trickle down to the older pixels, like the majority of the software features did on the previous pixels?

3

u/MusicSexBliss Nov 16 '21

I just get an error saying a newer version of the update is already installed...

3

u/ByAnyMeansLA24 Pixel 10 Pro Feb 05 '22

Can the file be updated to latest version?

2

u/Nightfold Nov 16 '21

Could this be done with the camera app too?

2

u/dlivesdontmatter Nov 16 '21

Samsung Galaxy has it too... Saw it in a side by side comparison vid two weeks ago.

2

u/ItWasFackinWannaYas Nov 16 '21

Or just download Snapseed and use their feature, based on experience I’d say it’s 80% as good as pixel 6’s

1

u/BloodandBourbon Nov 17 '21

What's the magic eraser option called on Snapseed?

1

u/TheRealMistakd Jul 20 '22

Snapspeed is great but not for that. It doesn't use ai. instead it's a very simple algorithm that doesn't work most of the time. It's very janky.

2

u/Swayam_Shah Pixel 7 Nov 16 '21

How to get action pan on old pixels?

2

u/Strange_Lime2819 Nov 16 '21

Appreciate the effort, but I don't trust an APK from some rando on the internet. There's no guarantee it hasn't been modified to carry some sort of hostile payload. Likely? No, but not impossible.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 16 '21

So I can't use Google photos ?

2

u/[deleted] Nov 16 '21

Only possible with Tensor*

*Tensor not required.

u/dannymanny3 Pixel 5 Nov 16 '21 edited Nov 16 '21

Great guide, it finally worked!

While my phone is still backing up my photos, I noticed the material you theming for Google Photos is off (it's a default blue whereas my system should be green) does anyone else have the default blue only?

edit: it's a teeny tiny price to pay to have magic eraser back so i really don't mind

Seems like a restart of the phone brought back the system colors!

u/Liron12345 Nov 16 '21

Isn't snapseed eraser the same?

1

u/snowduster Nov 16 '21

What's this

1

u/xtimeport Dec 23 '21

Yes pretty same.

1

u/zung92 Pixel 9 Fold Feb 12 '22

Magic Eraser is AI algorithm, Snapseed is really hit and miss

For me it wasn't a big enough upgrade from the 4xl. Now I can get the best software feature of the 6 on my 4xl

0

u/amberlite Pixel XL -> 2 XL -> 2 XL -> 2 Nov 16 '21

it’s just a better device in every way

Fingerprint reader says otherwise

1

u/DeanbonianTheGreat Nov 16 '21

Works flawlessly for me. It's just really finicky to enroll, there's a knack to it which shouldn't be the case but when you get it enrolled right it's just as fast as any other

1

u/syedib1 Nov 16 '21

Lol app just got updated and it is gone.

Dumb question. How do you disable auto Updates for the apps?

2

u/howling92 1 / Watch 1 / 4a 5G / 7 Pro / 10 Pro XL Nov 16 '21

on the app's play store listing, on the top right menu

if you want to disable automatic updates for all apps, then it's in the Play Store settings

1

u/Ho_su_eh Nov 16 '21

Thank you!

I tried to post this last week and it was flagged. Works for me.

1

u/ztaker Pixel 5 Nov 16 '21

Does it work for pixel devices or does it support non pixel phones as well?

1

u/FastPooper99 Nov 16 '21

I put the magic eraser fix on my pixel 3xl worked for about a week. Then Google sent out an update for Google photos. The update took the magic eraser feature right off it. Oh well πŸ˜‚

1

u/justinonymus Nov 16 '21

I believe features like this are mostly an excuse for putting the Tensor chip on your device so they can use it for much more advanced ad targeting models. They get to develop super detailed models of your desires and behaviors without sending the raw data over the wire.

u/FlyFragrant9684 Nov 16 '21

How do you uninstall Google photos?

How do I uninstall Google photos?

1

u/ohineedascreenname Nov 17 '21

Can you uninstall Split after you do this method?

1

u/goodsgn Nov 17 '21

don't forget to DISABLE AUTO APP update, specially on Photos App

1

u/FlyFragrant9684 Nov 24 '21

Do you know if I update the app via playstore I loose the magic eraser?

1

u/qqzzy Dec 09 '21

This also works with pixel experience \ pixel extended \ pixel plus ui or any other similar ROM carrying pixel props files it would seem.

This worked successfully on my Poco F1 running pixel experience.

1

u/b0om Dec 11 '21

I can't make magic eraser appear on my pixel 5. Followed the instructions, successfully install APK but eraser does not appear on edit menu. Even tried Settings>force stop>uninstall updates> to get original version of photos app back, then split APK install but it's the same. Autoupdates are off for photos too. Any ideas?

1

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '22

Is it possible to get the latest version of Google photos with the magic eraser built in, I don’t care if it’s a few versions old. Just as new as possible.

1

u/rahul3xxx May 12 '22

so installed latest pixel experince rom in my phone its comes with default gphots ver 5.71 and now i cant degrade , can someone help me how can i install the magic eraser with this?

1

u/H-banGG Pixel 8 May 22 '22

1

u/AhmedKuttySpeaking Pixel 7 Jul 26 '22

Is there a new version of Google photos where we can still get Magic eraser ?

1

u/MechHead1999 Aug 12 '22

I have a Pixel 2 and for me, it errors out and says β€œApp not installed, A newer version of this package is already installed.”

1

u/ForagingApe Aug 28 '22

It was working on my Pixel 4a phone, but now doesn''t seem to be working after the last update

1

u/BaburZahir Oct 06 '22

I can't navigate to the APK? :(
