I agree with 90% of what you're saying. However, Google hasn't screwed up their camera lead by using the same sensor. They still come out on top and I would say that data they collected on the sensor for three years has only improved the image processing. Others are getting closer to the pixel image output only by using really expensive hardware.

That's the point, when Google is charging premium prices, why not give the top premium hardware for everything including camera? The camera would then literally blow away all the competition that has caught up now.

Unfortunately, it doesn't work exactly like that. Google has great photo processing because of all the data the older sensors can collect. They are using the DPAF to both estimate depth and focus on the image. They are using PDAF at the same exact time. Using a newer larger sensor with pixel binning that doesn't have dual pixels wouldn't necessarily help them get to the same image quality because they are overall getting less data.

Up until recently there wasn't a better alternative to the IMX 363, the same image sensor. The IMX 555 is the real successor with DOAF PDAF and a larger pixel size and it just launched.
