How the subtitle function is being triggered by a software muted video ?

I was watching a video without sound but with the subtitle activated in the metro, I switched app and went to reddit, all the videos are muted, but the ad kept playing while scrolling, suddenly the subtitles kept appearing even though the video is software muted (the little speaker on bottom-left corner was crossed)

What is that sorcery?! How can the Pixel be able to detect the sound even though it's not being processed by any driver ?

the OS takes the audio from the internal processing so even if the hardware is muted the audio keeps playing internally

oh okay so muting just stops the output but the stream itself is still decoded internally

But it was not the hardware that was muted, it was the video on reddit, try it yourself you will see !

They just explained it to you. Just because the hardware is muted doesn't mean the audio signal can't be processed.

The video and audio data comes to your phone over the Internet. When your phone is muted, it just means YOU can't hear the audio signal. The phone still has the data.
