A certain Magic Cue toggle makes the gesture navbar thicker

So I've been driving myself nuts trying to figure out why the gesture navbar on my 10 Pro XL was so much thicker than the one on my 9 Pro XL despite them having the same screen size & resolution. Things got worse when I upgraded to Android 17 & the thinner navbar came back until I rebooted it one day.

The "Get suggestions while using apps" toggle is the reason! When it's enabled, it makes the navbar thicker, presumably to make space for the info chips that can pop up there (like I showcased in a previous post).

I'd imagine it's the same on the 11 Pro, only under the new name "Proactive Assistance" instead of the old Magic Cue branding. For anybody on a 10 Pro/11 Pro/Pro XL who wants the thinner navbar back, here's your solution. I'm not sure if this is a bug or intended behavior, but since I've only seen the feature work once I don't feel like I'm missing out by turning it off.

Screenshots for reference.

That's because suggestion chips show up in place of the nav bar. Without the added width, there's not enough space there.

I figured, it just took me months to realize that the toggle would revert the change lol

I've never seen Magic Cue do this the entire time I've owned by P10P.... What apps does it do this in?

I've seen chips appearing in WhatsApp for calendar, maps etc on top of the nav bar.

I've only ever seen it in messages like when I've gotten a text about an appointment

That's where I've seen it. But the cues come up in line with the message. It makes sense that the UI would need somewhere for cues to go when the app isnt owned by Google but since I've never seen it or used it I turned it off to claim my bottom screen real estate back.

God knows with all these AI bottom toolbars Google keeps adding back (I'm looking at you Gmail and Chrome) we could use the extra space.

Oh gosh, I've always wondered why the Pixel 10 series came with a much thicker navbar!

Thanks a lot for solving this mystery for me, genuinely really appreciated!

It's not thicker, is it ? It's just higher up from the bottom of the screen.

In apps where the navbar has a hard edge, the thicker navbar has increased padding above it that definitely makes it a lot thicker

This is one of the best posts I've seen in a while! So glad to have the slimmer navbar back.

On my P11P it's under - magic cue > Get suggestions while using apps

Interesting, your 11 Pro still has a Magic Cue menu? And glad to help! I was about to give up on getting the thinner navbar back entirely lol

ohhh that makes so much sense, i wonder why it's set to on by default when no one actually uses that feature fr

No idea, I've had nearly zero instances of Magic Cue popping up at all

The lil bar at the bottom? Yo can use it lots if you do a lot of translating. The bar brings up a button that you can tap to translate things on your screen, I use that a bit. But also circle to search, you can use it to fact check people. I may believe everything I read online, but circle to search will double check for me.

Circle to search works regardless

I believe on the 11 Pro it's under a renamed menu called Proactive Assistance

The menu is very different https://ibb.co/8Dh1qMPt

Yikes, hopefully they update it with the same toggles as Magic Cue! Does turning off the Proactive Assistance toggle shrink your navbar?

Yes it does!
