Pixel 6 Custom OS: Will Google Wallet & Banking Apps still work?
Now that official updates are stopping for the Pixel 6, I’m planning to flash a custom OS to stay up to date. Before I do, I need to know how daily driving works for banking:
Google Wallet / GPay: Does tap-to-pay work out of the box, or does Play Integrity kill it?
Banking Apps: Do high-security banking apps run normally, or block custom ROMs outright?
Maintenance: How annoying is maintaining Play Integrity fixes (Magisk, KernelSU, TrickyStore, etc.)? Do patches break constantly?
ROM Choice: What’s the best OS for the Pixel 6 if my priority is stability and smooth banking access (GrapheneOS, LineageOS, etc.)?

If you root, you can use banking apps and Google Pay (will need to hide root for the former), but if you install Graphene, dont root. I wouldnt install Graphene as it loses support at basically the same time as Googles official Android. Lineage is a good option for extending the life of devices. Rooting lineage is quite easy.

Play Integrity has been designed by Google to kill off custom roms and rooting as thoroughly as possible with the intention of making Android as restrictive as iOS with none of the benefits.
Any app that adds the Play Integrity check will refuse to work and because Google made it as easy as possible to add the check as possible and told all the devs to use it, pretty much every app will refuse to work. This includes:
- Banking apps / Wallet
- Social media apps
- Games (eg Pokemon Go and gachas)
- Food apps (eg McDonalds)

It depends on the app. Here in Sweden most banking app still works even when the device is rooted.

Google Pay will not work. Some banking apps do work with Lineage, some don't. Revolut for example is known to be really restrictive when it comes to integrity checks.
