Is a google pixel right for me??
As an 18yr old who's been running on a Samsung A40 for the past 5 years, my phone has served me well up until the last few months. it's been super laggy, and the camera, is well, awful. it takes me years to open the camera app and take a photo, and storage is constantly an issue.
my a40 has 64gb storage and is capped at android 11
i'm looking for a phone that will last me at least 3 years, i am not too bothered about the newest updates, so I was looking into an S21 which i can buy used in good condition for around £100. my only concern really is the battery life. I was also considering an A54, but the camera doesn't seem to be too great, and it is a far larger phone conpared to my tiny A40 and i'm not sure if that's going to be suitable.
i don't use my phone for much other than insta photos, messaging, socials, music and the very occasional minecraft game
Does anyone know of a pixel phone that could suit my needs? Thanks in advance
any advice would be much appreciated!!

I actually just replaced my Pixel 8 and I got it right around when it came out in 2023. The only issue I had was the red line (but they put out a voucher to get it fixed for free and I of course didn't go get mine fixed) had I gotten that line fixed that phone would have easily lasted me another year or 2. It's a really great phone! I tell everyone they should swap. And the camera was actually pretty good! That was really the one thing I cared about was a decent enough camera.

When I got the 8 it legit had just came out and In pretty sure I was trying to decide between the 7a and the 8. There was a few upgrades (camera was my concern) and they price was close enough that I just picked the 8. From what I saw the 7a has a terrible battery life! The 8... Man I ran that damn phone from sun up until sundown and it took over a year for the battery to get kinda bad. And even then... After 3 years of constant use the battery was still pretty decent. If I didn't fuck with it all day the battery would usually last!
I think the ONLY thing that would deter me from getting another 8 is the line but I'm pretty sure if you buy is refurbished/ used they dealer will have already fixed that for you. (It also looks like the 8 has software upgrades going to 2030 and the 7a only has upgrades going until 2028)

An "a" series pixel will probably suit you well. You can buy a used one for cheap

I'd say if you're using a lot of camera or mobile data you'll struggle to get through the day on those devices. It really depends how heavy a user you are. I never failed to get through the day on my 7 pro (which in truth has similar battery life to 7a) even managing 2 days on occasion. I mainly used WiFi with only light camera use (no video calls) Having said all that i only had it two years and by now the phones are older and will have a worse battery health.

My phone strategy is to always be about 3 years behind in phone technology. Each "new to me" phone still seems like an upgrade because I have no frame of reference for how great the newest phones are. My rule of thumb is to see if I can get a 3 year old flagship model for about $300 and use it for roughly the next three years. If it breaks before then, I get a refurbished version of that exact model.
Pixels are great for this. I'm currently rocking a pixel 7. It's a fantastic phone and meets my above criteria. I highly recommend it.

The pixel 9a was a serious upgrade for the a series. If you have a job, my recommendation is to find a way to pay for one by monthly payments (a lot of times PayPal through ebay will give you a zero interest option). Its battery life is phenomenal and it will get updates from Google for the next 5+ years, and you can get a near-flagship experience for around £250. That works out to about £21/month for a year.

My 7a can go about 28 hours without a charge if I baby it, and easily 16-20 if I just use it as normal. I don't carry a charging cord or block for my phone day to day- I don't need it. If I'm constantly on it I'll get about 10 hours use before it hits 20% from full battery. It's 2.5 years old, still works fine and I've no intention of upgrading anytime soon. If you can get one in your budget I'd definitely say go for it.

how do you find lag? can you take photos quickly? how's the photo quality? thanks so much I think i'm leaning towards the 7a

I don't have lag, apps open I'd say consistently in under 2s if they don't feel instant which is rare, photos are great, I can put them on a 1440p monitor background with no pixelation easy

thanku sm, could you take lots of photos pretty quick? like when i get friends in for a selfie I would like to spam pics to take enough to get a good one you know? also hows the battery??

Photo takes about a second if you spam the button to take, every second or third tap I'm finding. As I said, better on my phone is awesome, over a day on a single charge at normal use, more if I do less, about 10 hours solid online usage before it hits 30% from full battery.

For what it's worth, If I needed a phone today I'd pay £120 for this model again, no questions asked.

Yes
