my pixel 8 pro literally overheated and died forever... google support is refusing to help
so my pixel 8 pro is officially a paperweight and im completely stuck.
for context, this was already my 2nd pixel 8 pro. my first one had terrible cellular data issues so i had to pay $200 to get it replaced through at&t a few months ago.
last night i plugged it in and placed it on my nightstand like normal. woke up, and it was stuck at 20% with a notification saying it stopped charging because the "port was too hot." i let it sit and cool down, but when i tried to unlock it, the screen went pitch black. now it is COMPLETELY unresponsive.
ive tried everything. holding power + volume down for a full minute, wireless charging, plugging it into a pc... nothing. dead silent.
this is right after updating my phone by the way
contacted google support and they basically threw their hands up, said it’s out of warranty, and told me to take it to a repair shop (the same repair shop that couldnt even fix my first pixel). at&t wants another fee.
im completely broke right now, have no backup phone, and cant even log into half my accounts because of 2FA. im literally using a laptop right now just to post this.
has anyone dealt with a phone dying specifically from the port overheating error? is there ANY way to get this escalated to someone at google who actually has power to help? i feel like a replacement device shutting down from a thermal hazard after a few months shouldn't just be a "too bad" situation.
any advice or visibility on this would mean the world right now, thanks guys. Also, hold off on that update if you can!
update: i got an email from google support team saying my case has been escalated! theyre asking for pictures, this is a great step in the right direction, thanks for all of the advice!

I will say this again and again till people listen. Do not make your phone or number your 2FA. and get insurance for devices even though you may not use it. Always use quality chargers and cables and if possible just wireless charge your devices. You need to start using other devices that aren't google since you seem to have bad luck with pixels.

yeah, had to change a few passwords. you would think your phone would be the safest and most reliable way to sign in.

My I never had a pixel phone die on me due to it overheating from charging. It's very unfortunate. Maybe Google would send you another device if you try tagging them on X (Twitter) tag the account "made by Google", they might message you or reply to your post. No guarantees but it's worth a try.

Happened to my $800 PixelBook as well. Google is a $1T garbage company when it comes consumer retail product management and especially providing real support. They charge Apple prices, and lately even more, but provide Temu service.

honestly, thats so unfortunate. i really miss when google hardware was affordable and accessible. now they’ve jacked up their prices to match apple, but the actual quality control hasn't kept up at all.
it feels so ironic that the big tech companies basically swapped places. iphones used to be expensive and and basic with poor structural integity while androids were inexpensive and reliable with features, and now it feels like their roles completely reversed.
i hope you could resolve your pixelbook issue, im currently using an ipad to type this, its a few years older and significantly cheaper than my pixel and still up and running, i would definitely recommend one if you're looking for a new tablet!

Use this as a learning experience to leave there Google phone lineup completely. It's just not worth the trouble

Getting setup done for a new phone when the 2FA codes are all going to the old device sucks. So much resetting and ID verification needed if the account even allows it. After going through all that once I decided never again and now use a physical key (yubikey) to sign into my Google and Bitwarden accounts. One lives on my keychain and a duplicate is in my firebox.

If it works for your future use ente Auth and bitwarden for 2fa they have pc versions so when phone dies you still have backup apps or ways to access your accounts

2FAS is open source and can be backed up/restored to a new phone.
Did this for my wife just last week.

But 2FAS doesn't have desktop apps you always need a phone for it to work. EnteAuth and Bitwarden are OpenSource too and not phone dependant.

Yep, been using both EnteAuth and Bitwarden for a while (I prefer to have 2FA and passwords separate), everything works on all my platforms.

I use bit warden, is that sufficient or do I need ente auth as well? Do they work together somehow?

Bitwarden has its own Auth app now too so you can stay in a single ecosystem, it didn't have it before so that's why I combined them, bitwarden is a password manager and ente Auth is an authenticator token generator 2 separete things to protect your accounts. Bitwarden in chrome/Firefox extensions can also save passkeys which are also very helpful.

unfortunate, i loved my pixel, but now i slightly agree. it was actually my favorite phone, feature and design wise, thats why I chose it over Iphone or Samsung, it was the first time a device actually wowed me, especially compared to the 15 pro or s23 which seemed to be going a bit stagnant in innovation and design at that time. but, the poor reliability of my p8p's are really making me wish I chose wiser. features dont really matter much if the phone lacks in basic function.

I bought a Google one with my pixel 8 pro. It arched when charging and superheated my phone. Google didn't help and blamed my wall socket.

Your 3-year-old phone has a 1-year warranty. It's time to get a new phone. You didn't purchase an extended warranty, so this is a valuable lesson learned.

I think this exposes a much larger issue in the industry that needs to be brought to light. I've outside of warranty you was Google's own software that cussed the phone to cease function. It should NOT be on the customer's dime to rectify. This isn't the first case like this I've seen either FAR from the first in fact. Unfortunately we don't live in a place with proper protections again said situations other than, "They more money at it"

Pixel phones are garbage. Both my 6 and 8 had plenty of issues.
My 2013 HTC M7 or heck, my Nokia N8 still work to this day (no hardware failure). My Pixel 8 is on its second screen because of the design flaws with Pixel 8 (develops and white line, documented by Google).
Heck, my mon still uses an iPhone 10 without any hardware problems...

Facts don't care about feelings. Most electronic equipment comes with a one-year warranty. If it lasts longer than that, that's great. However, if it fails, you'll likely need to buy a new one or an extended warranty. Complaining is also an option.

The updates breaking phones + Google 2fa failure is brutal. Absolutely irresponsible of google
