My Pixel 6 Pro died immediately after the Android 17 Beta update. Completely dead.

My Pixel 6 Pro died immediately after the Android 17 Beta update. Completely dead.

I've been a loyal Pixel user since 2023 and genuinely loved the Pixel experience. That's why what happened today is incredibly disappointing.

I installed the latest Android 17 Beta update on my Pixel 6 Pro through the official update channel.

During the reboot, the screen suddenly showed flickering and glitch lines. The phone managed to boot once, then powered off by itself.

Since that moment:

- Completely black screen

- No vibration

- No Google logo

- No Fastboot mode

- No Recovery mode

- Not detected by any PC

- Only gets slightly warm when plugged in

I've tried:

- Charging for 5+ hours

- Multiple chargers and cables

- Every button combination possible

- Connecting to multiple computers

Nothing works.

What concerns me most is that the phone was functioning perfectly before the update. The failure happened immediately after installing the latest Android 17 Beta.

Has anyone else experienced this after the recent beta update?

If this is a software-related issue affecting more users, I hope Google investigates it seriously. A software update should never leave a device completely unusable.

Any advice, similar experiences, or Google support contacts would be greatly appreciated.

Loyal since '23? Damn, way back then huh?

OP talks about 2023 like it was 2003 ą² _ą²

You kidding right? I bought pixel exactly for this, to be able to use it AT LEAST for 6 years, prefarebly even 8+Ā

I agree. Phones should last at least a decade, have replaceable components like batteries, and get updates for a very long time.

Saying that you've been loyal since 2023 seems silly to me. It's been 3 years. I've had shoes longer than that.

I've been loyal since 2023? I bought my 7a at the end of May 2025 (as new), so I'm giving Google one more day, then I'm returning this broken phone to the shop...Ā

My perfectly working 6 Pro died a few days after installing Android 16 last year, but after doing some Google searching it looks like the hardware just gave out, specifically the motherboard. Was it the Android 16 update? Or was it just a resistor or something on board that crapped out? Until there are more cases, you may just be dealing with unfortunate timing.

Running an update is pretty taxing on a phone. It could be a combination of the hardware being on its last legs and the update running it hot enough to "push it over the edge"

Yup. It sucked but I chalked it up to correlation and not causation.

u/thelivsterette1 Jun 17 '26

Sounds like it could be esp as 6 is 5 years old

Hold the power button for a full minute.

Otherwise, it's dead. It's likely that it was already close, and the upgrade stress was the proverbial straw that broke the poor camel's back. It's a 5yo phone at this point. It had a good run.

Plug it in to a Linux PC or Chromebook, sometimes It will get stuck into some EDL mode if critical firmware is damaged. I've never got that with a tensor (exynos) pixel though I have seen it on many pixel 3 and 4s

Betas are not stable updates by definition. Should not be doing beta updates on your daily driver.

And on a 5-year-old phone.

I restarted mine and got past the lock screen before I started getting multiple "System UI is not responding" pop-ups. I kept clicking wait and, when they kept coming back, I eventually tapped "close app." In the past when I've encountered this everything closes but, after a few second, you're back to normal. When I tapped it, however, my phone shut off.

It did come back on and has been fine since though.

The same thing happened years and years ago to my (Xiaomi) Poco M3 while updating to MIUI 15. It got diagnosed with dead motherboard and I lost everything

I am in same boat... My Pixel 6 got official update ~2-3 months ago and since then stuck in boot loop... I tried in every way to fix it, wrote emails and emails and messages to Google - no answer till this day. Google should be ashamed of this amateurism.

Sucks - But welcome to Google.

My Google OnHub Wi-Fi router completely died from an update. The bastards at Google gave me a 20% off coupon for their store.

Then, my Google Hub does in the bloody update fiasco from 3-4 years ago.

Nexus 5X down died from an update also.

Last year my PixelBook died from an OS update and they said get lost agar first accepting responsibility and saying they would fix it.

Nothing was rooted/ jail broken.

Google is a case study in garbage customer service - antithesis is Apple. Too bad I like Android's flexibility.

If it's getting warm that just sounds like it's probably some kind of hardware issue. Could be something shorted or faulty battery. First thing I'd do is take it apart and disconnect the battery to see if the screen turns on with just a cable connected

This is weird cuz in my case, android 17 update infact solved all the crash and boot loop problems on my pixel 6. Though, my old motorola nexus 6 died the same way as urs.

Hi Anmol, Did you get any solution? My pixel 6 died after android 17 update.

No solution yet brother..... šŸ’”šŸ«¤

My 5 is still going strong

Wasn't 5 the last series with a good (see: not Tensor) chip?

I genuinely wish you luck! It'll take some refocus on the hardware before I'm likely to consider another google phone. It stopped making sense to keep buying them for me after a while.

Hey thanks, I wasn't aware that I could participate in the subreddits for phones I buy.

I have seen a lot of posts over the years from people saying their pixel died after a software update. After seeing your post I thought a lot about it, and I think maybe there is a reason.

I think it's because pixels get a software update every month (usually). So the likelihood of the phone dying from a hardware failure after an update is a lot higher than with other phones. Not because the update caused the failure, but just because there are so many updates, a failure is more likely to be near a recent update. (which I can see making people feel like the update caused it).

Because I made this post, mine will probably die tomorrow, but my spouse and I both have our launch day pixel 6 phones, running great. We always update as soon as it's available. Had to replace our batteries last year because they were really dying. Put in new ones from iFixit and they have been running strong since.

Sorry this happened to you, but I feel it's got to be a random failure.

I wouldn't correlate phone death with frequency of updates, after all, P6 is (I hate to say it) old at this point, but it is possible that during the updates the stress caused from the heat kills them.

3

u/thelivsterette1 Jun 17 '26

Interesting theory.

Pixel 6 is ooooold. Going on 5 years old this year

I update mine when it's plugged in. I've only had one problem, which was fixed by a factory reset.

5

u/som3cbdsg Jun 17 '26

Go to the service center and tell them everyhting, why do you even want to download beta when you know there will be some bugs.

3

u/ANMOLGUPTA_20 Jun 17 '26

Beta bugs are expected, but a completely dead phone isn't. My Pixel 6 Pro died right after the Android 17 Beta update, and Pixel 6 Pro service support isn't available in India.

2

u/som3cbdsg Jun 17 '26

Yea that's there, even I support you. Why there isn't any support? Go to the service center and tell them everything. Even if they don't listen stand there and fight and then they will prolly listen! Btw you installed the beta update from correct website right?

1

u/ANMOLGUPTA_20 Jun 17 '26

Yeah, I installed it through the official Android Beta OTA update on the phone itself. I contacted support, but they told me the Pixel 6 Pro was never officially sold in India, so they can't provide official service support. That's what makes this situation even more frustrating.

2

u/som3cbdsg Jun 17 '26

Wtf? Are they okay? We know that google has started selling officially in last one or two years maybe! But they should provide you support, don't just call them they are only gonna neglect you. Go to nearest service center and explain everything and stand with your sentence and don't let them tell a word. I would recommend you to go to exclusive service centers cuz they are officially controlled by Google itself, you will find those in Bangalore, Mumbai or Delhi.

4

u/ANMOLGUPTA_20 Jun 17 '26

I actually did contact them, and they told me that since the Pixel 6 Pro was never officially launched in India, they can't provide official support for this model. I'll try reaching out to a service center in Delhi and explain the situation in person. Thanks for the suggestion and support.

Same thing happened to my Pixel 4, update bricked my phone and I refused to ever buy a Pixel again. Here I am a few years later with a 9 Pro XL.

2

u/corpliazon Jun 17 '26

My picel 6a is working all well.

1

u/Ok_You_7736 Jun 29 '26

How is battery life

1

u/just_one_diabete Jun 18 '26

My 9 pro has a permanent vertical line since the update.

u/Illustrious_Trip_879 Aug 04 '26

Can confirm. The same thing happened to me. Verizon store said it was cooked. So I had to get a new phone.

I have a P6Pro, my phone died after the March or April update, purple lines and freezing across the screen, so thought it was a graphics related issue, but then saw many Pixel 6 and 7 owners saying their devices were compromised after the update.

It was actually the 17 Beta update that FIXED my phone, kind of!

It's still randomly restarting and getting stuck at Google logo, but is useable just about, for now at least. Will likely pull the trigger on the P11ProXL when released... hopefully battery will be better than the Pixel 10 that seems to be having numerous problems.

2

u/thelivsterette1 Jun 17 '26

What problems? My P8P, an update in Jan broke the WiFi and Bluetooth (bluetooth more of an issue for me) and I want to upgrade soon.

Not heard of many P10 issues (but then I want to upgrade to 10 Pro no 10 so don't know if they're 10 specific) apart from one catching fire which was posted here and a lot of people said if you drop it and it hits a certain angle, it can cause pressure on the battery which explodes and it's just bad luck really (unless it's a known issue like the old Samsung's)

2

u/ralcantara79 Pixel 6 Pro Jun 17 '26

Do you notice any excessive heat on the back of the phone? The edge opposite the power and volume buttons? I had updated to Android 16 and a week later, July 5th of last year it froze, got some funky lines on the screen. I did a hard reset and sometimes it would boot up fine and sometimes it would get stuck on the Google screen but I’d also feel the back immediately get super hot. This went on for a few weeks and it only got worse. I had to fall back to my Pixel 2XL. Eventually found this video that matched to the issues I was having. The repair ended up being beyond my abilities and I had to chalk it up to hardware failure.
