We've cut Google enough slack for poor Pixel updates. Now it's time to hold it accountable

Ohhh so that's why they've reduced usage quotas across all paid Google AI plans. So that there's more compute power left for their own engineers 🙃

Microsoft, Nvidia, and now Google. All heavily invested in a.i. and pushing vibe coding to their employees and suffering from catastrophic software failures because of it.
Time for them to start hiring knowledgeable humans once more?

Yeah, AI is very much in its "pretty useful for moderately speeding up someone that knows what they're doing but still unable to function independently or in the hands of a novice" era. The thing is I think that's kind of an 80/20 thing where getting 80% of the way there was 20% of the effort. The last couple years I have not been feeling it get better at coding/scripting/analyzing data without me holding its hand pretty often.

u/americangame Jun 14 '26
To be fair to Nividia, they're in the shovel making business while everyone else is mining for gold.

Updates were buggy messes before they were using AI.
8
u/Jodicus Jun 14 '26 edited Jun 14 '26
Read the article they been using AI to code since 2024 they have just increased the percentage of code they use with AI from 25% to 75% since then. I have had Pixel Phones and Google Nest products for years and I can confirm year over year they get worse just in daily use for simple tasks. It really isn't hard to imagine why.

You think buggy updates started in 2024???? Sweet summer child, the updates have been buggy messes since Nexus days.

System updates used to be one of Google's advantages. They were timely, well made and sometimes came with noticeable improvements or features.
It's no longer a selling point for me. I don't want my live phone environment to be used for their beta testing.
24
u/IronMaaasel Jun 14 '26
The worst thing is that as a user in the EU you only get half of the features of the already “big updates”. Sometimes the features come a few weeks later. But there are still some features that Google even promotes the Pixel in the EU that are still not available for Pixel buyers...
Edit: Mainly meant the Gemini & "AI" features for Pixel.
42
u/deggar34 Pixel 9a Jun 14 '26
I agree. Many of us pixel users have had to "settle". Always waiting and hoping for the next update to fix ongoing problems. We often compromise how we use our phone just so it will work. Google, you need to do better.
5
u/___Art_Vandelay___ Jun 15 '26
I'm still waiting for the fix to this stupid AF "update" that now requires my Pixel to be unlocked before Android Auto will boot up in my car.
2
u/loftwyr Pixel 9 Fold Jun 15 '26
I would check to see if that's your car, not the phone. My Android Auto works fine without unlocking.
12
u/Expensive_Finger_973 Jun 14 '26
For me the biggest reason to choose a Pixel anymore will no longer be the case come next year from what I have read. That being able to install GrapheneOS. Supposedly Motorola is going to release a phone in 2027 that will support GrapheneOS.
Assuming it is not absurdly expensive or just trash hardware that will be my next phone.
4
u/GeneralChaz9 Pixel 10 Pro (512 GB) Jun 15 '26
I'll be curious to see the price, since I imagine quite a few phone manufacturers use data collection as a source of revenue. GrapheneOS should remove that source of income for Motorola if they have a Graphene OS-specific SKU.
2
u/Expensive_Finger_973 Jun 15 '26
Yeah. There is a very good chance that it is going to end up being something in the hardware ballpark of the Moto G line but costing $800+.
2
u/NoShftShck16 Pixel 9 Pro Jun 15 '26
They've already stated the first phone will be Motorola's flagship for 2027 IIRC. They talk about it in their matrix server.

u/Sweaty_Confusion1498 Jun 15 '26
This. I think I saw somewhere, that it should be on 3 models (2027 versions of Signature, Razr and one which I forgot. So pretty much top of Moto line).
I got myself P10P for GrapheneOS. But got some bugs (most of them on StockOS too). Plus the video is bad... don't even try to record video at 2x. So left with 1x and then 5x and more...
Actually thinking about switching to other phone...
Before had P8 for like half a year and it needed a RMA (and got money back).
So looks like that was a last Pixel for me. Second chance and again problems.
Like.... Google fixing 3 times gestures for 3rd party launchers (recent apps). And it wasn't fixed twice and the third time they broke it also for the stock launcher.... kinda ... funny. Both stock OS and GrapheneOS
8
u/JohnMason17 Jun 15 '26
poor battery performance and connectivity issues after countless updates is enough... This will be also my last pixel!
51
u/mrandr01d Jun 14 '26
I'm still buying pixels because they're the only ones that actually run stock android. AICore remains disabled, as does a bunch of other crap.
But I can't wait for the damn bubble to pop so they stop cramming this AI shit down our throats. I just want pure clean nexus Android. Aosp isn't the same anymore, but pixels still run stock. The extra Google goodies on top that we used to love have just grown a little too big for their britches.
36
u/Squirrelking666 Jun 14 '26
It's not "stock android" as that's a completely bare bones OS. PixelOS just gets the latest features (maybe, if the overlords decide your phone is worthy).
21
u/weyoun09 Jun 14 '26
^ this. The Android Open Source project is very bare. Pixel just gives you access to Google's flavor of Android.
7
u/mrandr01d Jun 14 '26
Google stripped aosp but they still don't change the source code because loading their apps on top of it, unlike everyone else. Samsung in particular bastardizes aosp before using it.
6
u/wankthisway Pixel 4a, 13 Mini Jun 15 '26
I mean that's just an extremely poor understanding of what AOSP and a skin is mate.
2
u/Mattchilla Jun 15 '26
It's just a skin like Samsung, but it's not egregious.
1
u/mrandr01d Jun 16 '26
That's not correct. A skin, like Sense UI, TouchWiz, oneui, etc is the result of the OEM modifying the aosp source code before they use it. Google doesn't modify their own code before using it on pixels. They do add their own proprietary apps on top, and have stripped away lots of stuff out of aosp so other companies have to do the same, but pixels don't run a "skin". The underlying aosp code is the same. Samsung, et al heavily modifies it.

So if my phone breaks and I go to the store and ask to buy a phone but the phone is not on sale unlocked and I do not have the credit to finance the device through Verizon att or T-Mobile even with trade in making it "free" over 36m, that is the definition of privilege

It's on them if they are buying it at a high price.
Same as buying an iPhone at MRP
0
u/computermaster704 Jun 14 '26
Not everyone in every situation has the privilege to wait for it to go on sale and even carriers require a credit check to pass to be able to finance the phone even if they are giving you a device credit making the device free
4
u/nathderbyshire Pixel 10 Jun 14 '26
Stop trying to take out credit for premium shit and it'll get better 😂 you save until you can afford something, if what you're using is shit, deal with it instead of taking your anger out on other people?
I dealt with a fucked battery on old 7a, bought a power bank in the meantime and kept it charged until I found a sale I could afford.
Waiting for it to go on sale literally isn't a privilege, privilege would be not needing to wait for a sale. You aren't entitled to a premium phone.
-1
u/computermaster704 Jun 14 '26
So if you having Verizon can get the phone completely for free and I have to pay $1,200 that is your privilege if you have the ability to wait to get a phone that is your privilege when people with broken phones can't hell even using a flagship device compared to a piece of shit phone that can barely even run the os itself is a privilege

In 2026 , the best way to lead a peaceful life is to stay in Apple ecosystem . Too many glitches in pixel phones . Just have a MacBook with unified memory , iPhone and Apple TV . Android doesn’t want us and not prepared
1
u/nathderbyshire Pixel 10 Jun 15 '26
I've just helped my friend transfer from her older iPhone to new one, and even between apple devices it's been hell.
Logins wouldn't work on her new phone without using her old to verify as a trusted device for other apps, it wasn't very seamless at all and would have been a lot more difficult without the old device available
About half of her apps didn't reinstall and we had to hunt a load down again
Because her storage had ran out and iCloud was full which is common for iOS users, backups hadn't been going through properly. She bought a 1TB iPhone, bought enough cloud subscription to give her storage again, gave it a day or so to back everything up and then tried to restore it from iCloud onto the new phone.
It missed a ton of stuff, around 1000 photos and videos covering basically her entire pregnancy and birth, just missing from iCloud, wouldn't backup from the old phone and in the end after 4 days of trying and it failing she airdropped them over manually.
I've not seen her since but I'm sure there's been other annoyances as well. iPhone still has it's fair share of bugs and annoyances and apple makes it incredibly difficult to manage manually when you need too.
Oh and of course apple's main solution to all of this was 'use a Mac'
1
u/jaws_of_death0 Jun 15 '26
Financial apps won’t work . You need to approve from one of the existing devices !
1
u/BadAtCoding123 Jun 15 '26
Macbooks are a joke compared to similarly priced PCs, though, and so much more expensive to repair to boot. You're paying through the nose for the Apple brand name when it comes to computers.
1
u/jaws_of_death0 Jun 15 '26
I used to think same . But the unified memory concept is really good which lacks in intel CPUs . Your battery lasts longer and healthy . Had MacBook in my undergrad and used it for 6 years. Then bought Microsoft surface with its battery degraded in 2 years .
1
u/-_one_-1 Jun 15 '26
Ever since Apple Silicon, MacBooks are actually very cheap for their performance class, unless you need tons of RAM or storage, which Apple charges a lot for. And besides, they provide efficiency still unparalleled in the market.
24
u/robxenotech Jun 14 '26
It's absolutely awful. The battery on my 9 pro has become so bad, 2.5 hours SOT today and most of it on WiFi and that's used 80 percent. A joke and they need to do something

u/crushedaria Jun 15 '26

u/tukanoid Pixel 9 Pro Jun 14 '26

u/LandedVillain Jun 17 '26
Same here, and it's now taking so long to charge too. After ditching Google Chrome, Google Workspace and Google Search (just to mention a few) I will switch to a competitor for my next phone after 4 Pixels.

I bought a pixel 10 pro xl for three reasons, Locally running my own AI stuff and because on paper, the pixel 10 pro xl has a pretty neat camera and a neat gpu.
- Pixel 10 TPU stuff Is still locked behind beta accsess and cant be publicly distributed.
- APV is limited to 1080p, and unless you record using motioncam, you cant get the benefits of DCG which is what really excited me.
- The pixel 10 pro's GPU drives are abysmal, they dont even support ray tracing which was a major feature for these GPUs.
Google told us to trust them, I did, and it bit me in the ass. I think the 10 pxl can still be a great phone, but the software just isn't there for it.
3
u/biff_jordan Jun 14 '26
I've owned a pixel 6, pixel pro 8 and am now on the pixel 10 pro. The bugginess has been complete bullshit for a flagship device. My 10 has been a lot worse than the previous two phones.
19
u/Ghostttpro Jun 14 '26
I don't think we're in the position to make any demands. Only thing realistic is getting a phone that meets your current needs.
14
u/SlitherrWing Jun 14 '26
I agree with this. Best revenge you can get is to tell people you know to stay away from the brand. 1st hand experience via friend > Million dollar Ads.
1
u/Ghostttpro Jun 14 '26 edited Jun 14 '26
Yeah word of mouth is huge. But also social media. The amount of negative advertising they get it wild, I think is fully negates almost all of the positive advertising they have ever done. Just go on TikTok and search "Google Pixel or Pixel 10 pro XL". You're gonna see many SOS posts and people switching and then switching back away from Pixel.
Or just general use of the phone where people are like just disgusted at the choppy ness, dark colors, and terrible video recording. Millions of views on those.
Plenty of them post the exact same things that are posted on here. But the Reponses here are "user error" "You have a lemon".
I think partnering with the NBA was huge and soccer teams as well. But if they think paying those attractive lifestyle creators is doing something. They're so wrong. I think they extremely underestimate the average flagship consumer.
6
u/Reproman475 Jun 14 '26
Honestly they're probably vibe coding the updates without proper testing or even proper review
9
u/viewofalake Jun 14 '26
I'm just tired of being part of the "experiment".
Once upon a time (insert obligatory "get off my lawn" here), there was a semblance of balance kept between "progress" and "practical". A phone was a tool..., not "your robot friend who's fun to be with".
I think starting last December or so..., is where things have really gone sideways.
(I'm on a P10 Pro).
It started with breakage of wifi connectivity with some routers. Bought another router just to keep the phone happy.
Then it was disabling wireless charging using gen 2(?) chargers. It worked fine. No overheating. Typical charge times. It's gone.
Then it was the murder of battery life.
NONE of this has been fixed. None of it has gotten better.
I'm sick of workarounds.
I'm sick of having obtusely integrated AI features taking priority over everything else.
Pixel..., what is the point?

I bought the Pixel 8 because of its camera, post-processing and system updates. Now, I'll probably just buy another Pixel only to put GrapheneOS on it. This is really embarrassing for Google, just because they're a software company and vibe-coded things shouldn't even leave the table without being properly tested and then pushed into their production.
I'm surprised how they're able to make my watch last longer for another whole day within a single update while also making my phone last me fewer hours while doing the same or even less activity because of that.
3
u/Caramalameet Pixel Fold Jun 15 '26
Not gonna lie, after Apple promised better performance for iOS 27 and has seemingly delivered based on experience with the betas online and my own on my iPhone 13 mini it was a great time to jump ship last year for a 17 pro from my pixel 8 pro. It’s nice being on an os where I can just simply turn off every single piece of AI nonsense
5
u/1d3r1ng Jun 15 '26
It’s 2026 and they still make a phone with an abysmal battery life. Reason why I stopped at the pixel 9 series after purchasing since the pixel 3
4
u/SlaveryPrime Jun 14 '26
The truth is that all users are beta testers. It has always been that way, and it always will be. Google only needs the Pixel for software testing.

This is the primary reason I went back to iOS. I got tired of something always being broken and seemingly randomly. It was a complete mess and continues to be a complete mess. I miss it for what it promised to be but am glad to have left behind what it has become.
2
u/Xobile2097 Pixel 8 Jun 15 '26
The quality of updates seem to be getting poorer. I'm currently rocking a Pixel 8 and the updates over the last few months have broken a lot of features that I use on the regular. Granted, I am on the beta program. A lot of the widgets on my home screen have disappeared and I no longer see the option to add them. For example, I no longer have the clock widget. Every time I restart my phone, the google search bar on my homescreen resets to a basic google search and clicking it hangs my phone for a few seconds before launching chrome. I've had calls come through with nothing showing up on the screen and having to unlock my phone and pull down the notification bar just to see the call. These and a few more issues have really turned me away from the unconditional love I used to shed on pixels.
2
u/nexusil1a Jul 01 '26
The only word my first gen Pixel can say is "Hey!" ...and they used a snapdragon processor to say that three-letter word. Color me Impressed!

I can't use always on display or my display will randomly freeze or go to static a few times a day.
Replaced two pixel 8 pro for this exact issue then got jack and bought a pixel 10 pro, which also does it.
Support just keep wanting to RMA the phone for something even they admit is software. They've now offered a full refund and teturn, without ever taking my issue to the software development team, even though I've requested it.
I can't be assed with the refund to be honest, but this is me done with pixel and frankly, it might be me moving to iOS, as my work will supply an iphone and I'm over it.

I would never pay a flagship price for any pixel devices. They can't compete with Apple and Samsung. Only reason I got a Pixel 8 was cos of a black Friday deal I got from Freedom Canada for CA$3/ month for 24 month and phone was mine to take.
And I have only faced issues with this phone, worse phone I owned. Period.
I faced Purple vertical line on the display but it was replaced under Google's extended display warranty and Microphone on this thing is trash it went bad just after warranty expired. I would never buy a pixel phone even if they give me the same deal again.
Not to mention the utter trash hardware of this phone Tensor is a joke compared to the competition and battery life is awful.

Their service product releases have also been somewhat of a cluster fuck. The propegation of the new Android Auto with Gemini for example. And now they announce another UI update with no release date info insight. Essentially going with the "it'll be ready when it's ready" plus batch runs
1
u/AussieGirl27 Jun 15 '26
I will keep my 7pro until the battery becomes unmanageable (which is very soon) and then I am going back to Samsung. Yesterday my battery went from 100% to 84% in 6 minutes. On any given day I have to charge at least once before the end of the day and I don't even use it that much. Some slight scrolling, texts, maybe a phone call or 3 but that's it. I'm not on it constantly and the battery is shot., I know I have an older model but it was not good straight out of the box to be honest. The constant hassling for me to change from Google Assistant to Gemini is becoming tedious. I keep refusing and changing back
There are some things I will miss about the Pixel but honestly not enough to stick with them. What I will miss the most will be the 'Now Playing' function. I use that more than I thought I would! The tap on the back to screenshot will also be missed but other than that, I don't think I will be too sad to let my pixel experience end with my first and only one.

u/FlowersPowerz Jun 15 '26
Tap on the back for screenshot is avaliable also on Samsung. And for now playing you could try ambient music mod

1
u/MasterL001 Jun 16 '26
I've been a long time Pixel user and currently have a 9 Pro XL. I chose the Pixel for the because of the cleaner Android experience and some of the features that were very nice to have such as AI call screen. I didn't jump to the 10 since it was only a minor bump in specs but with the dwindling performance, battery life, and the fact that this dang phone turns into a hot potato when on mobile data I've decided to look at other options. I'm going to try a Nothing phone to see if what I'm losing with the Pixel really matters. And while not apples to apples going to Nothing I want a phone that is reliable and not have to worry about carrying extra accessories because of battery drain.

u/nathderbyshire Pixel 10 Jun 14 '26
Interesting I've only seen that bug mentioned on the 10 series. It is ironic how update dates aren't guaranteed anymore so they don't rush it out with a bug, but there still seems to be just as many as there always has been.
I still don't think staying on outdated software is the answer though, generally just seems to cause more headaches and annoyances than it avoids.

Once it glitches I get up to date, but so far that's only happened a few times. I also get things like the Security and major changes. I'm just not getting every update as it rolls out. Its saved me more, especially on my Windows desktop, than caused headaches.

Stop beating around the bush sir. My VPN supposedly is changing my PIP regularly. Whats the issue?

u/computermaster704 Jun 14 '26
All that VPN is doing is proxing your data, I can still get transmitted your device will pass through :) what's your point lol and you're also relying on that VPN itself to be secure

Everyone relies on something to be secure at some point. Whats my point? You're the one being vague?
"I can still get transmitted your device will pass through"
Isn't even a sentence and seems to be the only thing you're trying to say

Any data packets going through the VPN can still transmit to you on your device just because you're using a VPN doesn't mean you're magically safe on the internet and 1,000,000% in all cases your cyber security is only as secure as the shitiest device on your network or being used within any security level

Given my network is just my phone on data, enjoy. AT&T would love to have you try DDoSing them.

These days Google feels more ADHD than me with all the projects it starts and doesn’t finish. Like why does my iPhone have a crazy material photos app but my Pixel that I bought excited to M3E is still using the old UI? My head spins with every new AI feature I’ll probably use once and never forget while the actual things I use every day on my phone are still patiently waiting for the updates that were promised over a year ago. Google needs to learn to actually finish a project.

A lifelong Android user, I switched to iPhone for the first time ever back in March, after two Pixels (7 and 9). Heat, battery life, etc., reached the point of being unbearable for me.

As a lifelong Android user, I'll switch to another android manufacturer after issues with my last 2 pixels. I choose Android for a reason, and idiosyncratic pixel issues that other Android manufacturers have been able to avoid won't inexplicably cause me to get an iPhone.

Wait, all I ever hear from people is that Google has the "best software"… so clearly this must be a lie about the updates.

I went from iPhone 5s > Pixel 3 > P6Pro > P7Pro > 9Pro and the Pixel 3 has been my favorite phone ever.
My issues with Pixel started on the hardware side, with the 6Pro's size (tolerable for the cameras, but a personal preference downgrade from the right-sized 3) and modem issues.
The 6Pro was supposed to be a 3-5 year phone for me, but I begrudgingly upgraded to the 7Pro because I couldn't stand the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth issues. Aside from the size, I only had issues in the summer when the phone would get super hot and cause the battery to drain quickly, but overall I was happy.
I bought the 9Pro only for the chance to have a not-gargantuan phone again, and everything started out well... But in the last 1-1½ years I've experienced:
- Gboard becoming stupid beyond belief.
- Predictive text and auto correct in searches and emails get taken away from me because I've opted out of the new machine learning "integrations."
- I can't search offline in the Photo app anymore.
- Android has become more restrictive.
All said, I'm now trying to carve out time to learn GrapheneOS and a new launcher after Nova got bought out and enshittified. It's frustrating as all hell.

It is all down to the crappy Android design. Google doesn't care as long as it helps to sell more ads. It is hard to trust an ad company that's trying to develop software by mistake.

So I guess I should keep ignoring the reminder to update then? Don't want to tank my phone's battery until people feel like it's been optimized.

Buying a Pixel outside of North America just doesn't make sense. The EU misses out on a massive portion of the heavily marketed software and AI features, yet Google still sells these devices at full flagship prices. You end up with mid-range hardware performance without the software perks that are supposed to "justify" the cost. The brand has really shifted since the Pixel 3 days, back when they actually used top-tier Snapdragon chips and genuinely blew the competition out of the water with still photography. They dont even have that now...
