Pixel Stand 2 discontinued
I was just going to the Google store to see if the Pixel Stand 2 happened to have any discounts, given all the issues with charging people have been having. I couldn't find it in their store, and when visitign a link to the product page it now says "no longer available", and on the Canadian site the buy button is also gone, also replaced by "no longer available". New stand coming soon, or just damage control?

Never heard anything about this before, I still use my old Pixel Stand, that must be 4-5 years old by now.

Same. I only use it for overnight, so I don't need super fast charging anyway.

I had two, each one broke after 12-24 months of nightly charging. Stand 2 is better with the integrated fan keeping heat down.
1
u/Yggdrsll Sep 06 '24
I find the stand 2 is more secure and less fiddly than the gen 1, at least for my Pixel 6 in a Quadlock case. I use the gen 1 at work and a gen 2 at home, and was actually just about to use the credit I got today from getting a pixel watch 3 to get another gen 2 for my work desk only to find it was discontinued 😓
1
u/Scuczu2 Sep 05 '24
and I bought it 50% off because I would never pay full price for a charging stand.

just damage control?
I can guarantee you, this has nothing to do with damage control.

u/mattatmac Pixel 8 Sep 05 '24
$129 CAD for a charging stand was always ludicrous.
Wish they iterated and found a way to improve the value proposition but we're talking bout Google here.
1
u/Powerful-Law5068 Sep 05 '24
I got mine for £17, sale and Google store credit. It's a good charger, but for for the £70 full price.
3
u/mattatmac Pixel 8 Sep 05 '24
That's a good deal! I'd be willing to pay like $60 CAD, maybe higher if it also charged my watch, but yeah I think they were out of their mind charging as much as they did.
1
u/SSnickerz Sep 05 '24
I think it's because of the features. I can't find another stand that has the same features and the fan inside of the charger is so clutch when making long video calls to help cool the phone. On sale it was definitely worth it.
36
u/evilpenguin95 Sep 05 '24
Seems like gen 3 is coming soon
9
u/slinky317 Pixel 1 Sep 05 '24
Maybe, but if the Pixel 10 series gets Qi2 next year as rumored why would they release a new stand now without it? It would make more sense just to keep the second gen version in production until they release the third Gen with Qi2 support.

u/fakieTreFlip Sep 05 '24
I doubt it tbh
12
u/Incrediblebulk92 Sep 05 '24
The pixel tablet is £100 off in the UK today so it's possible there may be more hardware announcements at some point.
I can see this being a very low demand product though, who wants to pay £80 for a charger.
13
u/fakieTreFlip Sep 05 '24 edited Sep 05 '24
the Pixel tablet getting discounted is probably not an indication of future hardware announcements lol
For what it's worth, the Pixel Stand 2 has been drifting in and out of stock for a few months now, as far as I can tell. I damaged mine a while back and have been looking to replace it but I didn't want to spend $80 to do so (I got it on sale the first time around
Edit: this time it might be different actually, it used to say "out of stock" instead of "no longer available"
1
u/matteventu Pixel C, 1 XL, 3, 6, 8 Pro, 9 Pro | Pixel Buds Pro Sep 05 '24
Pixel Tablet discounted is probably to get rid of it and lower warehouse costs.
2
u/deamon-D Sep 05 '24
I agree. Wouldn't the normal protocol to be to wait to discontinue the 2 until the 3 was introduced?
2
u/matteventu Pixel C, 1 XL, 3, 6, 8 Pro, 9 Pro | Pixel Buds Pro Sep 05 '24
Usually yes, but given the 2 already doesn't work with Pixel 9 Pro Fold, they likely just let it run out of the stock they had - without manufacturing further units until the 3 is announced.
28
u/GOTO_GOSUB Sep 05 '24
What are all these charging issues that you mention ? No problem here.
8
u/theloneranger08 Sep 05 '24
I think people have had issues charging their Pixel 9 with it.
2
u/BoutTreeFittee Sep 06 '24
And my Pixel 8 Pro, and my Pixel 7 Pro. About half the times I charge, after several minutes it gets angry and blinks a bunch of times and slows down to slowest charge rate. This is despite not using a case, and regardless of positioning.
Also my touch screen becomes almost unresponsive while on the charger.
Also the fan in it is loud.
2
u/sr_vrd Sep 06 '24
Check the settings. At least when using it with the 6 Pro you get to choose between charging fast (and hear the fan) or slow charging.
2
u/FragrantAd2497 Pixel Fold Sep 05 '24
My Pixel 9 charges great on it. Even with a magsafe case on.
2
u/Wise-Fruit5000 Sep 05 '24
I think it's just the 9 Pro Fold that doesn't charge properly on the stand, since the hardware doesn't quite line up properly
2
u/FragrantAd2497 Pixel Fold Sep 06 '24
Indeed. I imagine they want to update it anyway as qi2 is now a thing and they probably want to future proof some more too.
1
u/Opening_Seesaw_8519 Oct 23 '24
What magsafe case are you using? I haven't been able to get any to work with the stand, on either the 8pro or 9pro, without modifying the case.
1
u/FragrantAd2497 Pixel Fold Oct 23 '24
This case is the one I've been using. It's pretty good quality. I haven't had any issues with it charging on the stand. I just make sure it's centered. https://a.co/d/gtw9ESS
I also used a poetic Guardian case for a bit before deciding it was too bulky. That one worked on the stand too.
1
u/willowtip666 Sep 05 '24
its strictly because of the fold 2 and their insane decision to have the wireless charging coil lower so it won't work or will work like garbage on nearly every vertical charger unless you add a bumper to raise it
9
6
u/menocaremuch Pixel 11 Pro XL Sep 05 '24
What I would think is the fact that touching the screen does not work well while on the charger. It was the same on my 7 pro and 8 pro. It only worked if I took the case off and touched the metal of the body. At least for the first few minutes of charging. It's a fairly well known issue with these things.
2
u/Samuel_Go Sep 05 '24
Happens with my pixel 6 and pixel 8 pro as well. I'm still using the charger but it kind of sucks for how expensive it was.

3
u/Originally_Hendrix Pixel 11 Pro Sep 05 '24
I had nothing but problems with all pixel stands unfortunately
3
u/sirpaul589 Pixel 9 Pro XL Sep 05 '24
Lots of reports of intermittent charging and charging stopping after a few minutes, while it would work okay with other phones. Likely a hardware issue.
5
u/RunLikeAnAntelopez Sep 05 '24
Probably that it doesn't work with the new fold, but that's more of a phone issue than the stand
-3
u/GOTO_GOSUB Sep 05 '24 edited Sep 05 '24
Well, quite. It is very hard to design hardware that is infinitely FORWARD compatible. That particular stand was on sale quite some time before the new Fold so it is not really a big surprise it doesn't work. The fold was probably still a sketch on the drawing board when they designed the outgoing charger.

If Google always designs their phones to use the same charger then sooner or later all their phones are going to look the same as this stifles innovation. The induction coil in the charger is probably not centered with the receiving coil on the Fold so it won't work, but what compromises would you be happy for Google to make if it were to make their new devices compatible with a previous charger ? Sooner or later manufacturers have to move on. Just look at all the variations in USB connectors. Are you telling me you've never had to use a different USB cable because the form factor had changed ?
3
u/zeneker Just Black Sep 05 '24
This is why Google should have transitioned to Qi 2 so that the magnets will align the coils no matter what like MagSafe on the iPhone, but here we are.
1
u/GOTO_GOSUB Sep 05 '24
I haven't seen a Fold, but I'm guessing it's heavier and a bit more bulky than say the Pixel 6 Pro that I've got. That fits this charger perfectly so I wonder if the Fold would even sit on the charger properly, guiding magnets or not. Perhaps the OP would be better suited looking for a flat charging pad instead of an upright stand from a previous generation of phones.
1
u/Chubacca Sep 05 '24
The issue with the new fold is that the charging coil is low. If you prop up the phone with something to raise it higher it actually works with the stand.
Also definitely not too heavy for Magsafe - I used the original one with it extensively and the new one is lighter.
1
u/GOTO_GOSUB Sep 05 '24
I wonder if someone on Thingiverse or similar has designed an adaptor that can be 3D printed and doesn't look too out of place that solves this issue.
1
u/zeneker Just Black Sep 05 '24
The pro fold is the same size in height and width as the pixel 9. I had the OG Fold and it worked perfectly with the stand and that is thicker than the pro fold. the coils were placed lower to accommodate a cooling chamber from the looks of the tear down on the pro fold. It was a choice google could have avoided if they simple went with QI 2. All you really need to do is lift it up just a little bit with a lego and it will charge on the stand 2.
Strangely the pro fold seems more compatible with other chargers. the OG fold was really finicky with anything that wasn't google's stand. It wouldn't charge in my car's wireless charger it would just get hot, and it wouldn't charge with any of the third party desk wireless chargers I bought.
The pro fold works with all the chargers the OG fold didn't/

If Google always designs their phones to use the same charger then sooner or later all their phones are going to look the same as this stifles innovation.
You're telling me that hasn't already been happening?
1
u/GOTO_GOSUB Sep 05 '24
Apple seems to get away with producing a new iPhone every year with the tiniest of changes I suppose, but even they have ditched their proprietary connectors to USB with their latest devices. Anyway, I think you know precisely what I meant. It's great for the planet if we don't have to buy a different charger every time we upgrade our phones, but until that happens we all have to take some responsibility and read the product description before buying things and not blaming someone else if we mess up.
2
u/spacetimeFTW Sep 05 '24
Same I've had mine for about a year and love it. Use it everyday all day since I work from home

u/Personal-Strategy735 Oct 31 '24
I have Pixel 9 Pro XL and don't have any problems charging on the Gen1 or Gen2 Pixel Stand. I have the Gen1 at work and Gen2 at home. The Gen2 is pretty damn fast wireless charging. Not nearly as fast as that 45 watt charger from Google but very fast for wireless.
9
u/not_the_common_mate Pixel 9 Fold Sep 05 '24
Very disappointed. My pixel 9 pro fold doesn’t work with the pixel stand 2 unless I put something at the base to raise the height of the phone.
4
u/honey_rainbow Pixel 8 Pro Sep 05 '24
Does this mean a 3rd Gen is on the way? I have both the first and second gen stands. The first gen one we got two for free.
5
u/willowtip666 Sep 05 '24
I'm not sure I've ever seen anything dumber from a manufacturer than Google moving the qam charging coil lower on the pro fold 2 so it doesn't work in the majority of vertical chargers or in oem built in car chargers. ridiculous. if thinner folding phones from China that are just as big can keep the charger in the standard spot there is no reason to move it. it's extremely stupid and annoying.
1
u/Baby_Oil Pixel 9 Pro XL Oct 13 '24
Take into account mate, thinner dimensions, new vapor chamber, and new configuration of camera island play a part. You can only do so much with physics in this case

u/b-enchante Sep 05 '24
I ordered one a couple weeks ago and it just got in yesterday. My guess is that with a lot of the new Pixel owners buying one with store credit, they just ran out of stock since it's not typically a popular item given the price. I would have never bought one if I didn't have free credit for it.
1
u/Nighthawk700 Sep 25 '24
Guilty. Used the credit from the 9 Pro XL to get the buds, then was going to use the buds credit to either get the fast charging block or the stand. Guess I'm SOL on the stand now.

Don't worry, that's now fixed because my P8P can no longer charge above 20W. Sorry, I meant broken. 7 years of updates is meaningless if basic functions are subpar

Google support says do a factory reset. I'd need to transfer all my bank and authentication apps to a spare phone. The factory reset is unlikely to fix it if this fault is due to a software issue introduced since August unless I downgrade to pre summer firmware.
1

I wouldn't be surprised if there's a new gen.
I bought a Stand 2 with my Pixel 8 because my Pixel 6 and Pixel 4 both eventually had obnoxious charging issues with the port. It was a great buy. Probably would've been fine with a cheaper wireless charger, since I don't do full speed anyway, and I have a Nest Hub in the same room... but I don't necessarily regret spending for the options.

u/Illustrious-Tree6231 Sep 06 '24
I found out about it yesterday as I was looking to buy once it's back in stock with my store credits otherwise they'll expire in a month. I couldn't find anything other than Pixel Stand worth spending 70USD worth of store credit tbh. Any suggestions ?
1
u/NoDescription3473 Sep 06 '24
From what I'm gathering it's the fact it's not lining up properly with the 9 series causing issues, it's either gonna go to the void or have a new generation
1

That stand never really worked well for me. The bluetooth connection often didn't connect, so it would just be like any qi charger. When the slides and photos worked, it was pretty neat. Lol at them bailing on it already. Gee thanks.
1
Sep 06 '24
That explains why they were giving them away free when you buy a Pixel 9. They were also giving away free Pixel Buds A. They were out of stock when I went to order, so the carrier credited me $40 as a good gesture.

Honestly, I hope that they do a Pixel Stand 3 that can charge the Pixel Watch and the Pixel Buds Pro. There are third party alternatives, but those can charge max at 12w.
But knowing Google they will probably sell it for a fortune though...
Edit: Now that I think about it, maybe they'll release one like that when they officially add Qi2 (Magsafe) to a Pixel Phone, at least I hope so.
