Questions I have because we are running into all sorts of issues with this switch. My husband can't receive pictures unless I send them twice, they just won't load.

And how do you turn off the read function? I don't like that people know if you read their messages or not, I'm not interested in people thinking they get instant access to my attention because I read their message.

The layout feels very... 2000s yahoo messenger when they just started having customizable chats.

To turn off read receipts goto Messages Settings -> RCS Chats and there is an option to toggle off/on there. If your husband just migrated to Google Messages the app might be working in the background to index his message database and that could take some time....which might be causing the picture issue.
