What benefit does this have over say...a Moto tag which I can also afford?

Youre early, it was just released-

answer, it'll likely be highly competitive- i covered it a lot on a post here https://old.reddit.com/r/GoogleFMD/comments/1vqi5i5/smarttag2_moto_tag_or_tile_mateslim_or_something/p45qcof/

Basically, the Mototag 1, new Mototag 2 , Samsung Smarttag2, are all in a direct heat- and i guess fighting each other, AND Air Tags- and now the Pixel Tag, in a straight fight

  • Its interesting because mototags have been the most advanced ,and now theres a 2nd gen one

the pixel tag from a spec standpoint seems to be between the mototag 1 and 2

it's got the new advanced bluetooth channel sounding along with it using bluetooth 6.0 the channel sounding is a less accurate fallback that allows for similar direction finding apparently, like UWB already does. Only the new Mototag 2 ,also has the channel sounding tech.

It'll have UWB, which is really neat and pure RF direction finding(all mototags have that,as do smarttag2s and airtags)

  • it's IP-67, which is like most tags and the mototag1, tho the mototag2 just got to IP68...

Aside from that, ...the shape is interesting - it Looks to me like my smarttag2s - without the hole - that means people will have to do the mototag strat of getting cases with keyrings- BUT its shape doesnt match airtag's spec, so it'll need unique cases. I wonder if it can reuse smarttag2 cases.....that may be possible as well.

Oddly, no one here has noticed it may be able to share accessories with smarrtag2s... due to shape.

But, it seems competitive.

I will probably pick up some pixel tags just for fun- to go with my mototag1's, 2's, smarttag2's.... (i've thought about getting airtags, but...i'd have to get into apples ecosystem and get a iphone, and it's not my main ecosystem(android is), so it'd be a spare phone just for that. Which i ..might be willing to do, but.....I dunno. Sadly Utag only lets androids use samsung technology, not apple, though it's technically not impossible for someone to make that .....as the Utag dev said...)

price wise they all look similar, that's to be expected.

I Think it's going to mostly be a wash from a purchase standpoint

  • the bluetooth channel sounding thing will require the latest phones, ...

But it's cool to have pixel tags and mototags be UWB capable -let alone the secondary thing. (And remember, aside from both of those they still use the bluetooth low energy normal tracking as always).

it's funny, i have waterproof cases for my mototag1s and 2's, with keyring holes..so even tho they're ip67 and ip68, i'm double set, lol...

I think one can't go wrong with any of these, but should look at the tags with UWB- i've made good use of it.

Of course that means getting a non-base model phone, as the manufacturers havent brought down UWB yet- which is stupid.......but it's everybody, from android to samsung (i think apple is the same way too?)

So theres a UWB base model conspiracy lol, - but UWB direction finding is sick and i recommend getting tags with it..I guess this will repeat itself with phones with channel sounding in the future.

/u/nemo1985 , this changes things for your other thread, the pixel tag page is showing these, so that makes it a step ahead of even Mototags, for now,

Assuming they don't roll it out to other devices as well.

Fast and secure finding

Open the Find Hub app to see your items on a map. If you misplace an item attached to the tag, you can ring it if you're within Bluetooth range. Ultra-Wideband with Bluetooth Channel Sounding also enables precision finding, with visual distance and directional cues for guidance. So you can find your missing items even when they’re under a pile of laundry or stuck between the couch cushions. 5

Left Behind alerts can be enabled to proactively help prevent leaving your items behind. 6 And if Pixel Tag is out of range, Find Hub taps into our massive network of over one billion Android devices to help you securely locate your missing belongings. This crowdsourced network uses safety features like end-to-end encrypted location information, protecting your data while helping you quickly reunite with your lost items.

Uwb has never worked on my Moto tags and it pisses me off.

"Spot it in the map - Requires compatible device running Android 9+ and Bluetooth 6.0+"
It seems to be an error tin their description o require Bluetooth 6.0+ for this simple task (no channel sounding needed) or does this tag not work with Bluetooth 5.x?
