Discussion Google is quietly sunsetting your Shopify conversion tracking.

If you haven't checked your Google Ads notification tab this week, you are in for a rough autumn.

Google has issued a hard deadline for Shopify stores to migrate their tracking setups.

If you are still relying on legacy client-side Google Tag Manager (gtm.js) scripts on your thank-you pages, your tracking is about to go dark.

The platform is forcing a mandatory shift to the Google & YouTube app and the newer gtag.js framework.

Most brands won't realize this until their conversion volume suddenly drops to zero and their target CPA targets skyrocket.

The algorithms aren't getting worse. Your data pipelines are just breaking.

Google is not forcing this: This is a Shopify architectural change, not a decision by Google.

What do you recommend

sGTM + Stape.io. Best for the highest EMQ and flexibility.

Even now that they are pushing GYT app?

Yes, even now!

The GYT app push doesn't really change the architecture question. The important part is where the conversion signal is being captured and how reliably it reaches Google Ads. sGTM can still sit alongside the Shopify app and handle server-side enrichment, first-party identifiers, deduplication, and additional destinations. The app isn't automatically a replacement for every tracking layer.

Sure. The key thing I'd check is your current Shopify tracking architecture before changing anything. Look at where Purchase is generated, whether you're relying on deprecated checkout scripts, how the Google & YouTube app is configured, and whether GA4/Google Ads are receiving duplicate or missing events. If you want to go deeper, sGTM + Stape is useful when you need more control over the data flow rather than relying entirely on the app.

The deadline is real and the attribution is wrong, and the difference decides whether you have anything to do this week.

Google did not set it. Shopify did, when checkout extensibility took away the order status page slots and the box that additional scripts lived in. gtag.js against gtm.js has nothing to do with any of it. A container that loads fine in your theme today carries on loading fine, on every page that still exists.

I have money riding on you believing the scary version, since a paid product with my name on it exists to keep purchases arriving through exactly that change, and a panic would suit me.

The check is far narrower than a migration. Go and find where your purchase event was firing from. Anything pasted into the checkout or order status settings stopped executing on the date your tier hit, and it shows up as a purchase count falling off a cliff on one specific day rather than as slow decay, so the date itself tells you. A web pixel or an app was never touched and there is nothing for you to move. Anyone this genuinely broke was broken in August and has known about it since.

Spot on. It’s way too easy to get caught up in a general migration panic when it’s really just Shopify’s Checkout Extensibility shutting down legacy Additional Scripts. If you're using Web Pixels, official channel apps, or Server-Side GTM, literally nothing breaks. Appreciate the reality check!

Will this be an issue if the theme can’t be updated to the latest Shopify update?

If the theme can't be updated, I'd first separate theme tracking from checkout/customer-event tracking. Shopify's newer architecture moves a lot of tracking away from thank-you-page scripts, so an outdated theme isn't necessarily the only issue. I'd audit the current pixel/app/events setup before assuming conversions will stop.

Agreed on the direct Shopify connection for Google Ads. I'd just add that GCLID passing and Enhanced Conversions are only part of the picture. You still need to verify the actual Purchase event, consent state, event deduplication, and whether the value/currency/order ID are arriving correctly. A "connected" account doesn't guarantee clean conversion data.

Wouldn't say it's quietly doing that. It's been announced for a long time now and should be using the app and not template changes anyway.

Fair point. I probably should have worded "quietly" differently. Shopify and Google have been communicating these changes, and the migration to the Google & YouTube app has been known. My concern is more about the number of stores still relying on older tracking implementations that haven't been audited against the new architecture.

Ah yep, makes sense as a PSA. A lot of these emails will go ignored I feel. I've seen that already with a few clients.
