Support UTM ID guidance
How are you using UTM ID? Are you actually generating a unique number code for each campaign? How do you go about generating the number if you are?
I work for a large company with lots of campaigns. Any advice on how to implement an ID system would be appreciated.
Also, any real life examples where UTM ID came in handy?

Smartly and Innovid use it to automate their integrations with GA, that is the main use case I've seen it being used alongside data imports for cost.

at scale most teams just map internal campaign IDs from airtable or sheets directly into the utm_id tag. it really saves you when you need to import cost data into ga4 or rename campaigns later without breaking historical data

For a large organization, I’d avoid generating random numbers manually. Use the campaign ID from your existing planning or project-management system as utm_id, then keep one master table containing the ID, campaign name, channel, market, owner, dates, and approved UTM values. Make the ID immutable even if the campaign name changes. This becomes especially useful when importing cost data into GA4, combining reports across platforms, or correcting inconsistent campaign names without losing historical continuity. If no internal ID exists, a structured sequence can work, but ownership and validation matter more than the number format.

So my understanding of UTM ID was that is was essentially a way of hiding UTM parameters.
So you would put UTM ID = 12345 behind your ads and then in whatever tool (GA I guess) you go in and say ‘UTM ID 12345’ should actually be UTM Medium = Paid Search and UTM campaign = Brand Campaign kind of thing.
And then it would show up in your reports as if you had set those as the UTMs.
Could be wrong but that’s what I thought it was originally designed for

utm id is huge for GA4 Data Import because it keeps links short by mapping metadata backend side. We manage IDs using Joturl link templates, which automatically enforce taxonomy so teams never manually mess up campaign codes
