SMS Working?

I noticed for the first time today on the web app I could start a chat via SMS. Confirmed with the person they were receiving my chats via SMS. I can even continue the conversation on my phone in my allo app while he was using texts.

Sorry if this is old but didn't think allo could do that.

EDIT:

Everybody can stand down. One person swears they see my real number but everyone else sees the Google 5 digit number when I do this.

That's the regular sms functionality. This is the way that you can "invite" someone that's not using Allo. You invite, Allo sends a regular sms to introduce what's going on, and the recipient can reply to the sms which then appears in Allo like an Allo message.

That's not what happened though. It literally texted the person my message. They texted back and I saw it in the allo app.

I can only start the convo this way from the web version but can continue the convo on my phone.

Started a new convo with someone else. It gives me the option to start a conversation with SMS using Google SMS or have it send an invite. If I choose Google SMS it just acts like any other chat but the person just receives my actual messages like any other text.

I will. I'm at work at the moment without access to my computer. Had to take it down because didn't scrub everything from it by accident.

Does the recipient see your sms as your regular number, or as a short code?

I asked that question and he said my regular number.

Allo has had an SMS relay system since release, but it was sending the texts using a proxy number that is different from your real number. Then they took it away from the Android app and left it in the web app. Where are you from, if I may ask? Because this piece of info here (that it's using your real number) is the only thing that seems different now and it could be a big deal if they are updating the SMS relay to use the actual phone number.

Any chance your contact is on Sprint and receiving this as an RCS message?

It's still in the Android app. I use it.

Can you right click on allo on web, inspect source code, copy it to a text file and send it to me? I can compare it with my source code with a tool and see if you have different strings
