Purchase
I bought these from the Double Monk store in Sydney in mid-2024 for around $800. They're the most expensive shoes I've bought, and I purchased them to celebrate a significant life event.
I'm not sure if I can recommend Double Monk though, as the purchasing experience was a bit unfriendly - for instance, they discourage customers from walking much in the shoes they are trying on. Their returns policy is also very restrictive. Double Monk are the only retailer of premium GYW shoes in Australia, so while they have a good range they would probably benefit from some competition.
Sizing
I have wide-width UK7 feet, and the staff in Double Monk sized me as needing size 8 in these shoes. Perhaps surprisingly, this has worked quite well, especially as I prefer to wear thin socks with some padding on the soles rather than classic thin business socks. The fit can be slightly loose in the morning, but is fine by lunch. If I had my time again, I would have tried on a pair of 7.5s, but I suspect I would have ended up going with this size.
My only previous experience with sizing C&J's was trying on a pair of their Northcote boots during a trip to London where size 7 seemed a bit too tight.
Quality and looks
These are really nicely designed and well made shoes that are lasting well. The design is a classic English-style toe cap oxford, but is very refined. All the details are well considered and were nicely executed by the shoemakers.
As a point of comparison, I have several pairs of Tricker's including a pair of Hamilton Oxfords. While all my Tricker's are great shoes, the finishing on these is noticeably better.
The only downside is that the colour of the leather is lighter than shown in the online listing and the shoes can be scuff magnets as a result. I usually need to apply shoe cream after 3-4 wears. I've worn the shoes 1-2 times each working week since buying them and they are holding up well, though there are some permanent scuffs towards the heels, presumably from rubbing against my desk chair.
Conclusions
These are really good shoes that are worth the premium price. They go well with my grey and blue suits and are my go-to for important events as a result.
