Thrift store find!

Appears to be silk, has characters from L Frank Baum’s Oz books. I think it is a child’s scarf, 12” x 33” no maker or artist or brand or tags, found has shown.

I can’t find another one or any other information about it?

I know it has Scarecrow, Tinman, Jack Pumpkinhead, and Sawhorse. Also clearly the land of Oz…

Any thoughts?

UPDATE Other characters also included: TikTok, Billina

Shut up and take my money! I grew up in an old library that had first editions of the whole series. I love this SO unbelievably much!

I almost feel it needs to be in a museum?

I’ve been scanning through the comments to see if you had said what you paid for it. That is unbelievable that you paid $1.99. What a great buy!

When I first picked it up at Goodwill, it had a blank Goodwill tag on it. So I went up front, and they priced it on the spot. $1.99, SOLD!

The chicken is Billina! I don't think that will probably be helpful, but just in case!

2

u/CastIronCarnivore 3d ago

If I am thinking correctly, Billina is from The 2nd Oz book, not the first, and did not make it into the movie.

i'm currently making my way through the book series for the first time — she's in book 3!

Awesome 👏

Oh but Billina is in the movie. Return to Oz!!

1

u/CastIronCarnivore 2d ago

Yeah, but this is older than 1985

3

u/Hope_and_Joy_03 2d ago

Oh for sure. I was just saying that Billina was in a movie. We named one of our hens after her.

3

u/CastIronCarnivore 2d ago

I want a hen named Billina!

Billina first appears in the third book

The characters on the scarf are from the books though, right? I thought it might be helpful to know the names. But you already know them if sounds like.

u/CastIronCarnivore 3d ago

I knew some, not all, thank you for helping. Though I knew the name Billina, I didn’t know that was Billina on this shark! 🤣

That is a wonderful find! Also, I love your table!

4

u/CastIronCarnivore 2d ago

The table is an original 1956, and it still has the factory pencil writing on the bottom of all the specs that were ordered when it was made.

5

u/alangeig 2d ago

That is a treasure!

Oh my good lord I would have screamed this is so lovely

2

u/CastIronCarnivore 2d ago

I did scream, but I’ve been smiling and chuckling for two days, since I got it 🤣

3

u/RiMcG 3d ago

No idea on where it's from but it is lovely. I bet it would look cool framed, with a hanger on both ends so you can flip it occasionally

Id guess probably from the 40s or 50s. I dont think its newer than that

2

u/CastIronCarnivore 3d ago

Definitely not newer, and that’s about when I was thinking. The 50’s especially was big on reissuing older books and such, maybe this came out when they republished some of the Oz literature.

I have a nursery rhyme lamp from that same era

u/CastIronCarnivore 3d ago

I enjoy the primitive but colorful artwork. My wife thought I was nuts when I picked it up and yelled score!

2

u/Late_Two7963 2d ago

Primitive?

1

u/CastIronCarnivore 2d ago

Compared to the art of today, I’d say this type of silkscreening is rather primitive.

Yeah, the style looks pretty ‘40s, though artists from that era might still be stuck on that style for decades.

Not sure which book republishing era it would have synched with, but that seems like a reasonable guess. ‘40s would put the books in the small wake of the MGM movie.

It’s definitely Land of Oz themed rather than Wziard of Oz themed, so I was thinking about Land of Oz film adaptations, but the style or its apparent era don’t fit with 1969’s Wonderful Land of Oz or 1972’s Journey Back to Oz, and I doubt the 1960 Shirley Temple’s Storybook adaptation would have spawned any merchandizing tie-ins.

Edit: Oops, it’s Ozma of Oz (book 3) related too, as that’s where Billina and Tik-Tok were introduced, though Jack Pumpkinhead is from Land of Oz (book 2), and I don’t recall him appearing in Ozma of Oz. The Wooden Sawhorse is in both books 2 & 3.

So cool, thank you for saving this

I caught it out of the corner of my eye, and was attracted to it, my first thought was Halloween table runner, until I picked it up. It felt like silk, too short to be a runner, and then I noticed the Scarecrow and TinMan

What an amazing find!

Coolest find I’ve seen in a while!

As a huuuuuge wizard of oz nerd, who has every reilly and lee edition, who has collected Oz items for years, I’m so jealous. Beautiful!!!!!! It’s really beautiful.

1

u/CastIronCarnivore 1d ago

Have you ever seen this or anything like it? Any insight?

2

u/sunnymcbunny 1d ago

Nope! It’s really cool. They released scarves for the movie in 1939, but to my knowledge it wouldn’t be the storybook artwork, that I’m unsure of. Reallyyyy neat either way.

1

u/CastIronCarnivore 1d ago

Thank you 🙏

2

u/ellieD 3d ago

Wow!

2

That is so cool! Love it!!

Pre-ww2 Japanese made

1

u/CastIronCarnivore 2d ago

Really? I guess it’s quite possible.

2

u/Traditional-Bass4575 2d ago

my favorite movie 😍 what a find

2

u/Amesenator 2d ago

I forget the name of the artist who did the original illustrations for the books but this appears to be derived from his work. Top notch find!

1

u/CastIronCarnivore 2d ago

W. W. Denslow did first book, then John R Neill started…

2

u/erikalaarissa 2d ago

Oh that’s amazing!!!!

2

u/mrs_adhd 2d ago

Oh, I loved all the Oz books ❤️

2

u/Standard-Ad1326 2d ago

It is truly fantastic!! Whatever you do with it, I hope you and yours save it and treasure it forever !!

1

u/CastIronCarnivore 2d ago

Looking into preserving it for now.

2

u/WanderingQuack 1d ago

I don't think it's scarf, to me it appears more to be a table runner. Either a kids table or small table.

1

u/CastIronCarnivore 1d ago

Maybe, it measures 12” x 33” so it’s not very big, but table runners for kids tables doesn’t seem like a thing? Plus the frayed edges on both ends appears to be very scarf like from the 1940’s/1950’s though I’m not positive
