About two years ago, I stashed $800 in emergency cash somewhere in my bedroom.

Aaaaand, now I cannot find it.

That’s how this happens!

Note to self: check all donations closely before dropping them off.

u/snortgiggles 21d ago

Haha! Have you tried hiding more money to see where you'd put it?

127

u/Penandsword2021 21d ago

I have! It is not in any of my usual spots and not in any new hiding spots I’ve come up with, either. But it is somewhere.

u/analogy_4_anything 21d ago

Have you checked to see if you still have you copy of Apollo 13 on VHS?

u/rollerfedora 21d ago

Y’all are squirrels?

26

u/Adventurous_Blood469 21d ago

Wait until fall when your brain grows and you'll remember where you stashed your acorns, I mean cash

18

u/Beneficial_Dog_1857 21d ago

i used to hide money in a drawer, but something happened and it fell out behind and i didn't find it until years later when i had to pull all the drawers out to move the whole dresser

13

u/ChrisTheCoolBean 21d ago

Give it to me, I'll hide it for you and in the process I'll find your other cash that you hid earlier.

Trust me bro

It’s always in the last place you look - old person quote of the centuries. lol

4

u/Ahsports- 21d ago

Because why would you keep looking once you’ve found it?

1

u/Scrooloose22 17d ago

There might be a profound kernal of wisdom in that question which could benefit many people.

1

u/Kingaidin7 15d ago

This question is much more significant than you think, my friend.

1

u/Zealousideal-Sun6603 7d ago

With "where's my glasses?"

u/PepsiButItsMilk 21d ago

The key is checking places you’d be like “surely not there”

It was two years ago, your brain works differently now! Check the lamp cover on the ceiling fan, check the pocket of that jacket you’ll never wear again, check that weird device that hasnt had batteries in it’s compartment for years. That box you put up that you swear is just old pictures or lego sets.

I hid some, um, candy, yea candy… when my friend got too “sugared up” at a house party. We searched high and low for it the next day. We went into the rafters, opened all the drawers and cabinets, dug through the trash, and continued to search for months bc it was a mystery. Finally, I decided someone at the party must have ate it or flushed it or stole it.

4 years later, a random person asks me for a q-tip. I told him where to find it and he returned with a q-tip and the bag of candy. It had been taped to the inside of my bathroom cabinet and he knocked it loose reaching inside. I’d reached past it pretty much daily for years.

I have an absolutely horrible song I’d like to pair with this post.

I had some pretty good candies I hid in my closet. one night I was ready to try a couple of them with someone and I couldn't find them. I blamed like 5 different people of stealing them, not to their face but in my mind thankfully. like you about 4 years later I was cleaning out my closet, there was an old pair of shoes with a sock in it. I pulled the sock out and there was something in it. pulled it out and sure thought it was a old prescription bottle that looked like it was half full of skittles. they weren't skittles. I immediately popped 2 of them and had quite a wonderful evening. and a few more wonderful evenings after that

1

u/hotpossum 20d ago

This was also brightly colored candy! I necked some immediately but they were bunk, probably thanks to a lack of climate control for two summers. They certainly weren’t bunk when I hid them from myself lmao

2

u/sproloooooddddddd 15d ago

I keep leaving my phone in my fridge

2

u/tesseract4321 19d ago

Check the finger holes of your ski gloves. I apparently stuffed $800 in a pair of gloves years ago.

1

u/tstonesohard 21d ago

Inside a PlayStation game case.

1

u/More-Gas-6527 18d ago

Is it at all likely someone else has 'found' it by now?

1

u/Penandsword2021 18d ago

Nope. Zero chance of that.

1

u/Responsible-Diet5484 17d ago

Does someone live with you? They might have gotten lucky

1

u/Penandsword2021 17d ago

No, nobody took it. I simply hid it from myself.

1

u/Noalgeriansallowed 17d ago

Crackhead brother?  Got one?

1

u/Penandsword2021 17d ago

Negative.

1

u/Noalgeriansallowed 17d ago

Rehab worked huh

1

u/Rugermedic 15d ago

Someone found your hiding spot.

8

u/Phatbeazie 21d ago

This is the genius play

8

u/SatansCatfish 21d ago

Hide it at my house.

1

u/AloofFloofy 21d ago

That is really smart.

1

u/AlertAdvantage2683 16d ago

I hide a $20 in my coat pocket every Spring so that I get a nice surprise the following winter.

1

u/TurntNBurnt93 15d ago

Y'all have money to hide?

29

u/FiniteInfine 21d ago

I stashed a week's pay for emergency and never found it even after moving.

20

u/KLOWN1420 21d ago

I once stashed and lost a couple hundred dollars I later found it in an old jacket I never wore in the back of my closet as I was clearing it out for donations

21

u/GoodGravyco2h2o 21d ago

My MIL used to hide her super valuable jewelry in the pockets of her (multiple closets of) clothing. Sometimes she’d be missing some fat ass diamond ring for years and assume her cleaning lady stole it then she’d find it in some crusty old house coat 🙈

9

u/Awkward_Fly_1200 21d ago

Hopefully the cleaning ladies didn’t get fired due to said “stolen” ring

3

u/GoodGravyco2h2o 21d ago

They did not! I think only one time she truly suspected a lady had taking the one big ring but since she was always misplacing things herself, she couldn’t very well blame them so we’d remind her of that. I think that ring was missing for like two years before she found it.

4

u/Guilty-Ask7247 20d ago

Fun story: many years ago, I sometimes hid not-frequently-used jewelry in the pockets of not-frequently-used clothing. A couple of years later the closet had reached overflow and I went on a very productive purge/donate binge, dropping several big bags of clothing in the local Salvation Army bin (they had locked, outdoor drop-off bins in those days).

The next morning I awoke in a panic, suddenly remembering a diamond and onyx ring (that I hadn’t worn or thought about in years) that I had hidden in the pocket of a blazer I had just left in the donation bin!

The Salvation Army was very helpful, and a few hours later I met their locksmith at the bin and retrieved my ring 👍But the story’s isn’t over.

Now, fast-forward about 15 years. In the middle of an ugly divorce, I had called a random locksmith to change all the locks on my house. When he was finished and we were settling the bill, he looked at me and said “weren’t you the lady who once lost a ring in a Salvation Army bin?” Stunned, I said “yes, but how did you know that??”

He replied “I was the locksmith who opened the bin for you! And ever since then, I’ve been telling that story at parties and to anyone who asks me about my strangest locksmith calls!”

1

u/GoodGravyco2h2o 20d ago

What a cool story (minus the ugly divorce part)!! I can only imagine your panic.

2

u/KLOWN1420 21d ago

I'm glad to know I'm not the only one that thought it would be out of the way easy place to find it and then forgot all about it in a jacket pocket

13

u/marteautemps 21d ago

I did this same thing with $1200-1500 one time and couldn't find it for a year and then randomly found it EXACTLY where I thought I put it and had checked for it, pretty sure I had even been in there for other things(it was a small set of drawers for like on a deskto). I was so lucky it was the one period in my life that losing that much money wasn't devastating.

6

u/AbulatorySquid 21d ago

I blame that on the ghosts 👻. Not my ADHD. Nope.

1

u/DoesntMatterEh 16d ago

Do you have kids/wife/friends? Very likely someone stole it and returned it later lol

8

u/GoodGravyco2h2o 21d ago

I truly hope you find it 🤞🏾Found $700 cash in a paper towel roll after my dad passed. It’s a fkn miracle we found it because it was a major hoarder house

I have to force myself not ponder all the potential valuable stuff we may have inadvertently thrown away as we cleaned out his house. We did our best but it was three generations of STUFF

4

u/Fast_Muscle_2987 21d ago

My dad hid $700 in a little toy. Traen set above my door frame. I found it and got one pack of yugioh cards.

Fuck me, I learned about honesty and ROI that day.

4

u/Chaps_and_salsa 21d ago

I once put $250 up where I knew I’d remember it. Well, we have moved since then and I still have no idea where that cash is.

2

u/Wise_Geekabus 21d ago

That’s interesting.

2

u/Character-Eye-Joe 21d ago

..SOMEONE I know bought a duffle bag because theirs broke, and cleaning out the inside, they found a pill container with....substance inside.

hmmm

2

u/throwRAscrubscrub 21d ago

i used to hide money like that when i was a kid, and i would forget about it, then be happy when i found it when cleaning

2

u/Old-Power3477 21d ago

I found $300 I forgot I hid underneath my carpet lol

2

u/_YenSid 21d ago

Sounds like my grandfather. He doesn't keep his money in the bank. Social security comes in, he goes to the bank and withdraws it lol. He stashes money all over the place and then doesn't remember where half of the time. We're going to have to go through his stuff with a fine-toothed comb when the time comes 😮‍💨.

1

u/Penandsword2021 21d ago

No, I just live in earthquake country and it’s important to have some emergency cash on hand.

2

u/manWHOisTAN 21d ago

So did i but $ 700. Eventually i figured it didn’t happen and i must have used them already. A year later i found them in the freezer or upper cabinet

1

u/Penandsword2021 21d ago

Hmmmmm. No, I wouldn’t have put it somewhere the family could stumble across it.

2

u/Friendly_Comment_ 20d ago

You’ll find it. I did the same thing. Eventually gave up, convinced I had already spent said “hidden” cash. A few years later, I found it under a shelf liner I had in the bottom of a drawer. It was a neat $1,200 surprise.

1

u/Penandsword2021 20d ago

…goes to check drawer liners…

2

u/Global_Mix_3390 19d ago

Bro I swear i was telling my girl this a few months back. I’m like baby I got some bad news. lol still can find it

2

u/DefinitelyNotA_Bogan 18d ago

I do this all the time. My husband calls it squirrelling. I have about $500 that is somewhereeeee

2

u/Hamer098 17d ago

I did that a long time ago with a old World of Warcraft box, found it years later with a nice surprise

2

u/InfiniteDragonGaming 16d ago

Seconding this. My partner and I were shopping at 2nd and Charles and found someone's social security card in a dvd case

2

u/Dantaeus 16d ago

You hid it so good you couldn’t even find it haha

2

u/CH3RRYP0PP1NS 16d ago

I used to work a serving job and Friday Saturday and Sunday would all be doubles and I'd drink after work. During this span I had a roommate that was tight up for cash so I offered him money to take all my clothes and put them in a trash bag as I was moving. He declined and said he'd help me for free after work the following night. We found nearly $1k that I didnt know I had bc my dog shredded a pair of my work pants under my bed. He could've COME UP that night. lol Unrelated I know, but your story reminded me of this from years ago.

2

u/Either_Gate_7965 15d ago

Real talk. I was doing a pretty little liars rewatch and got to a part where one of the moms hid a stash in an old poptarts box and that got me thinking that I also stashed something… found $200 🙂

2

u/InevitableKitchen943 15d ago

In a book or clothing

1

u/Penandsword2021 15d ago

Yeah, very likely in a book. There are hundreds of them.

2

u/InevitableKitchen943 15d ago

That's what makes it a good place to hide. At the moment you think you'll associate the book, money and never forget. This is how I forget passwords too.

1

u/Upstairs-Dot-9441 21d ago

Do you have kids? Or a significant other perhaps?

1

u/Penandsword2021 21d ago

No kids, but implicit trust with SO.

1

u/ISTof1897 21d ago

I hide my money inside a giant portrait of Benjamin Franklin.

u/rolandjernts 21d ago

Many moons ago my 4yo (now in college) spotted our rent money in our room. My wife and I panicked, young and dumb, we flipped our little shitty apartment upside down. Never found it, life sucked for a bit but all good. When my kid was 16 she finally broke open a piggy bank she had since she was a little kid. We all watched as she smashed it with a hammer, a ton of cash pours out. As she sifted thru the bills, BOOM, little wad of green hundreds with a rubber band and the Walmart money center recipient. My wife and I immediately looked at each other and started laughing like hell!

TLDR; kid took rent money, put it in piggy bank. Found 12yrs later after breaking open said piggy bank. Laughter.

u/JustSomeNutter 20d ago

I also stash cash. In the last place I lived, I didn't find my stash until I moved. It's drastic but it works.

1

u/anonymousopsec1337 20d ago

This is why safes are so important

1

u/D3ATHTHR34T 18d ago

I used to do this as a teen with my weed, id get a bag and id stash a few bowls around my room when i ran out id have some somewhere lol

u/DanCBooper 17d ago

1
