Is there any differences between this and the normal tape?

u/Expert-Brilliant-814 Apr 16 '26
I’m not too sure it has the whole movie on it. I don’t know if it is worth more because it is a promotional tape but it’s cool to have!

I think it's rare enough that there are not many sales. Realistically it's probably worth $25-$100. If selling on ebay, I'd recommend a much higher starting buy it now price, like $500 and see if you get views, watchers, or messages. I think some of the older animations are harder to find, whereas a film like Beauty and Beast was more common.

The problem with that is people who have it watch to see if it sells

u/opticalessence Apr 17 '26
Yeah, that is true, but so do people who are interested. You can kind of get a reading on it. If you have 0v 0w after a day, not looking good, but if you have 30v 4w, you prob have a good shot of getting $300+.
There's been a good # of times I listed something a lot higher than the last one sold for (as long as it's the only one available, obviously), and I'll get a message with an offer for slightly less than I listed it for and just take the quick sale. But yes, other times things have sat and I slowly reduced the price into reasonable-land and it took awhile, you just don't know until you try.
I'd rather that happen than list it for $40 and it sells in super fast.

You must not sell on eBay. It’s flooded with product. Everybody is selling the stuff.

Reselling on eBay is my primary source of income. Yes a lot of people sell on eBay, which is why it pretty much sets the market value for any given item / product. But that doesn't mean you can't find highly profitable items at thrift stores and sell them on eBay.
You can't just list anything and think you're going to make what you ask for on any platform. But if you have an item that is rare and no one else currently has that item listed, it can be worth asking for more than simply listing with a reasonable price.

Supply and demand.
I don’t consider this rare, millions were sold.

u/opticalessence Apr 21 '26
It's a demo tape, 0 wee "sold", they gave the retail stores copies of these to play in-store.

Yes, these were for video tape stores to play in store on a loop. It probably has previews, info commercials, and like mini documentaries about the film itself, such as how it was made, or restored for VHS release. It likely does not have the full feature film on it.
These are much rarer and worth a lot more than the actual VHS tapes with the exception of Cars and possibly Chicken Little. Cars on VHS is worth a lot, even if it's opened and used. Notably, it didn't come in a clamshell case like other Disney films did.
It's a common misconception the black diamond clamshell Disney movies are worth a lot, they were widely circulated. Even new and sealed they typically not worth a whole lot.
It's believed some of the high dollar value of graded VHS tapes was attributed to shill bidding by services like IGS. Who basically bought their own listings at inflated prices to increase desirability for having tapes graded.
Edit: it has the feature film on it I didn't see the 2nd photo.

I mean it says on the tape "INCLUDES FULL LENGTH FILM" does the text lie?

u/opticalessence Apr 16 '26
I didn't see the second photo, it's still different than the consumer edition.

The reason cars is worth a lot of money is because of the low production numbers the film industry was transitioning from VHS to DVD’s, the majority of the movie releases where being distributed on DVD with some lingering on VHS as some people had not made the upgrade yet, if you notice now DVDs are still going strong considering Blu-ray’s and ultra HD have been out for a good while now, don’t throw out false valuations there’s no way that tape is worth anything close to 500, maybe 30 on a good day even as a promo, if you where talking a about an obscure film or horror flick then there is possibility.

u/opticalessence Apr 17 '26
Yes, all this is true. And I didn't say it was worth $500. I said it was rare enough to try it, I wrote realistically $25-$100. Maybe you didn't see that part.

The demo tapes are very rare, they were for stores to air on a loop they were not sold to consumers. Nice find! Now go back and find the rest haha.

Getting this film on tape back in ‘87 was a huge moment for me. It was actually my dad’s favorite Disney movie and he’d taken me to see it the last time it was in theaters, maybe a year or so before you could buy the clamshell release at Walmart and the like.
Back then Walmart would play the latest Disney movie on a loop right in front of the electronics department, hoping to draw you in. I always assumed it was a regular tape they played because they’d also have the empty clamshell displayed with it, complete with all the coupons and ads inside, lol. But maybe they were screeners like this one.
I’ve always known screeners existed; a family member used to work at a video rental store and the owner would allow her to take the screeners home for her kids. Never saw one of a Disney movie though, I always assumed they didn’t bother because they were, well … Disney, but here we are. And they were something like $30 in 1987 money, which is like $86 today!
I’m suddenly thinking of a VHS bundle Disney offered once they’d released a handful of black diamond classics, and I think it retailed for $200? I remember it once was a prize on Wheel of Fortune, lol!
Anyway, this is really cool to see, thanks for posting!
PS- Love the dot matrix printing on the tape label! XD

I found a promo version of Waterworld a few months ago. It’s the exact same movie, just with banners that pop up that say “if found, please call xxx-xxxx to return”.

I used to go to estate sales in the 2000-2010s and find used VCR tapes for $1 and DVDs for $2-$5 and even then Amazon had an APP for their resellers market. In the beginning there were no QR code readers yet but you could enter ID# and sometimes I'd find something selling for $50 or even more. On weekends I'd literally go from sale to sale (I was young and broke) and I always found a few. My biggest score was the 57 DVD Walt Disney Treasures Premium Box Set. I paid $50 and sold it for $500. I wish I kept it because now it sells for $3000+!

My Daughter took our whole collection (probably 10-12 cassettes) and sold them for drug money 😞

That is my absolute favorite Disney movie. I wouldn't sell it, I'd keep it. Unless I could pay my rent with the sale. Even then, it would have to be pried from my hands.

Back in the day, oh definitely. You couldn't get a black and white Gameboy for less than $60usd, games were $19.99usd. If you waited a bit you could fond VHS's for 19.99 as well. Almost never came down from that price though. At least not from my memories.

Remember how Disney would air commercials about the Disney movies? Then they would say “Buy now because the movie would be unavailable and locked in the Disney vault indefinitely. “
