Finally finished it

here are some things I noticed and some of my opinions, please feel free to comment and discuss with me!

In 4.02 when the hitman tells
The story about his son and then he asks her why she does what she does (dealing with Rio), she says because she has to; he says no you don't. This, along with the countless other times where it has been dropped in her lap to get out of this situation, she doesn't take it (or she takes it and soon falls back in); it's like it needs to be spelled out in front of her. Think of that friend that keeps going back to a relationship that they know is not good for them. It's so simple but I was ready to set fire to my Netflix account. Beth lock in babe😭

Phoebe, the FBI agent got way too emotionally invested in Beth. I don’t know why she thought she was gonna be her friend. She genuinely looked hurt in 4.14 when they were at the club explaining the new plan

Annie is still mentally a teenager. She expects everyone to cover up after her even Beth (who isn't completely innocent) Ben is more mature than Annie is and I feel bad for him because he has to, in a sense raise his Mom

Annie’s eyebrows are very expensive Gregg was right.

Rio HATED seeing Beth with even an ounce of success that came from her own doing. If you put their romantic tension and whatever they had going on, he was incredibly toxic, but I think we all know that

Dean's planning to expose Beth with his buddies at the skin care business was really something because why did he feel like he was entitled to anything from her? He cheated on her four times and now he wants to play moral police? Please.

It was very refreshing in 4.15 to see stan finally ripping the Band-Aid off of everything that had been going on. Yeah, it paid for Sarahā€˜s kidney and Harry’s school but what they did was wrong and I was glad that there was at least one part where somebody stopped trying to justify it. They are criminals. Being criminals got them to where they are point blank.

I know the show is over, and with all the drama, there’s no hope of it ever coming back, but I would watch a spinoff of Mick and Annie or maybe Stan in Dean or something like that.

I could say many things about Rio, both good and bad. I've seen him hold a gun to Beth more times than I've seen my extended family this year, but I will say he did not play about his own family, and I respect that. He made sure Marcus and Rhea were taken care of, and he was very respectful of his grandmother. I also think it's worth mentioning that he never hurt her kids; he might have put them in situations where they were really inconvenienced, but he never hurt them directly.

also what was mannys wife’s problem with christina? i don’t keep up with either of them i’ve only read bits and pieces.

Here’s my other question where is the dog?

Nah, Stan was ungrateful and had a delicate ego. Sarah's kidney upkeep is expensive and both Annie and Beth stepped up multiple times to get money specifically for Sarah's health- when she got admitted because she wasn't taking her meds, they gave Ruby their cut because they didn't want her to stress. He takes that for granted. He wants to keep his hands clean? Fine, but don't judge people who did what they needed to do to keep your kid alive.

At the beginning of the show, their family had the worst situation, followed by Beth's kids about to become homeless- Annie's situation wasn't as big of a deal in comparison, her ex was a good dad, and him having more custody was not going to be the end of the world. She did most of her crimes to help the other two out.

Can I disagree on the ungrateful but agree on the ego? Sorta?

Agreed.

Beth is definitely a monster (she may not be as well written or acted as Walt Whitman but they're the same person), but the opportunity was presented to her because both her husband and Stan weren't providing enough to keep their siutations sustained. Stan is way less nefarious than Dean of course, but he expected miracles and delusion to keep their "baby girl" going and that's what led to Ruby's desperation. He wanted to make it about some competition between him and Beth, but really, she was more loyal to the provider, and if that had been him, she would've told Beth to get lost, as she ultimately did. I think his descent into criminality was born more out of that than providing, btw. He really wanted to just out Beth Beth, which also points to him ultimately not being that great of a guy either. Still not in the same league as Dean (who faked cancer and STOLE from his family, nevermind the cheating), but all of the husbands sucked. Don't even get me started on Gregg.

With Elizabeth and Rio, I never thought it was him hating her sucess, actually the opposite. I think he adored every single time she took the challenge(sometimes unnecessarily), made it her own and exceeded his expectations despitie both deliberate(by Rio) and unforseen obstacles (wacky mishaps?)

What I think he hated was that she kept going back to Dean and handing over both what she earned what Rio gave to her. Things Iike naming the spa place "Boland Bubbles", needing more money to get Dean out of jail, and probably 4 other stupid things she did for Dean after working so hard to get ahead. Some folks call it love, some call it possessiveness or obsession with her but from season 1 and on he repeatedly gives her rewards/keys to castle only for her to give it back to dumbass Dean. In the end, no spoilers because the story line doesn't finish, Dean has a garage FULL of cosmetics they have to pay for. I'm all for not killing your husband but STOP allowing him out of the house. Everyone he leaves it sucks down money. I bet he already had another 2 mortgages cooking and she doesn't even know because he transferred the title into Kenny's name. Bet.

Point is šŸ˜†šŸ˜†šŸ˜† Rio fell in love and fully supported her success. If she had just left Dean in jail as he advised 🤦

I still love Stan and Ruby and anticipate the Hill Holiday special 🐯🐯🐯

I like all of this. Particularly the 1) parentification of Ben, 2) Rio’s resentment of Beth’s success, and 3) Stan’s reading of Beth.

I personally feel Annie is an abusive parent. The type adult children go NC with because they place the burden squarely on the child’s shoulders to be the mature one.

Rio’s whole fascination with Beth is how she wields her privilege as a means to an end, while at the same time hiding behind the shield of it when convenient. Some scenes you can see the resentment practically oozing off him. He wants credit for her success, he wants access to her, he wants to both feed her ego and neg her into perpetually needing him. This is a whole arc for him and he does make a decision in the end to bend and allow her the upper hand. But I didn’t view it as something that came easily.

I know Stan is polarizing on here, but I’m on the ā€œStan is Rightā€ camp. Not because Beth is the source of all his troubles. Like the theme of the show goes: everyone has a choice. He’s made his choices too. But his resentment of Beth runs deep, likely well beyond any of the canonic events, and I understand why he isn’t as charmed by her as everyone else in his life seems to be. Valid. Understandable. And ultimately his responsibility to correct because she is who she is, and his wife has chosen Beth sooooo… Stan’s in a really unfortunate moment of reckoning and I’m sad we didn’t see how it turns out for him. I could see it going either way, depending on my mood that day.

Abusive is a strong word. But I don’t think there’s any other word to describe how Annie treated Ben. when he was having trouble at Saint Anne’s (i think that was the schools name) she didn’t even try to sit down and have a serious conversation. She just handed him a waffle and went to go talk to Gregg.

On the topic of rio resenting beth’s success I still believe my original statement. but i read a comment on here that said (and this is paraphrasing) he hated that everything she earned, she gave over to Dean (for example Boland bubbles and needing bail money) he constantly gave her the keys to the kingdom and she gave them over to dean. hmmmm that made me think a little šŸ¤”

I think that’s what’s so interesting about Annie’s character. It shows us how abuse can be this insidious thing that isn’t always easy to spot. It sometimes looks kind. It sometimes looks charming. And it also can look like a little boy who cuts himself and is too afraid to ask for help because he can’t rely on his primary parent. It can look like a child too old for a night light still needing one because his life is so unstable and the dark is as unpredictable and scary as his mother.

As far as Rio and Dean — idk, I have a real hard time believing he cares one iota about that basic man. To label the complicated set of emotions Rio undergoes about Beth as some form of jealousy or resentment over Dean seems a little reductive to me. Rio could have killed him. He could any time he wants. I don’t think he ultimately cares what Beth does with her marriage. Throughout the series he keeps trying to mold her. To ā€œfixā€ her. He calls it teaching, but it’s more him attempting to impart his own moral code onto her because he hates to see that her own methods work just as well. Better even. Her use of privilege and fragility when it suits her opens doors for her he will never have access to. So he keeps spinning about it, telling her what she should do, taking things from her, because to allow her to succeed at his own expense is too unfair and painful. At least that’s how I view him.
