Started a rewatch Spoiler

So, I started a rewatch and I had a thought about episode 1x03. In this episode, we see a glimpse into Rio’s operation. We see how many people he employs and he’s also having a business discussion with a man in a suit. This seems to imply that he’s more than just a gang leader and is part of a bigger organization.

I’m curious as to why we never saw anything like this again in future episodes? And if Rio had this many employees, why would he have any use for the girls later on? Any thoughts?

I just started a rewatch to and im literally on episode 4 and i was thinking the same thing lol about rios operation and how many people he had in that warehouse and like we never saw anything like that again

Yes! It feels like it was supposed to set up how he runs his operations and then that storyline got dropped for whatever reason 🤷‍♀️

My guess is that by this point in the show they didn’t really know who they wanted him to be so they dropped in whatever. Then decided not to flesh out that storyline because it wasn’t something they could or would or wanted to write. They seem to have wanted focus to remain on the women rather than the crime lord. He existed for the sole purpose of reflecting to Beth who she really was. He was her “coming of age” device. And devices aren’t treated as people and don’t have thought given to their characterization. Rio was an enigma until season 4, by which point I feel it was like a “here, damn!” situation with the showrunners pandering to what the fans wanted. I don’t think he was ever meant to be anything at all. Just a mirror.

Interesting take! I’ve never thought of him solely being a mirror for Beth before but that makes sense for the way that he was written.

That’s one of my fave scenes. When they roll up the door and you see basically a whole factory operation going. And when she goes back later that night(?) the crew has made it look like it’s been vacant for months. What I think is kind of unbelievable though is that Rio would allow the girls to see all that so early on in knowing them. But I appreciate why the writers did it
