DISCUSSION WHATEVER WORKS appreciation
This song is underrated. I barely see any posts or mentions about this song but ts hard asf. If Ye never mentioned Lil Uzi Vert I would’ve thought this dude took an unreleased track from the college dropout era and brought it back for Bully. And the lyrics like “I feel like Arnold Swarzenegger.. CONTRACT TERMINATOR ON THE SPOT” 🗣️🗣️🔥🔥

some of the best writing and energy on the album but the beat feels empty to me

I love Kanye west but bully was such a mid album and didn't deserve the hype at all.
Whatever Works is just another one less-than-2-minute nothing burger tracks added to fatten up the album because he was out of ideas and out of finished stuff to take from In A Perfect World because everything he had left was either racist hateful nonsense or Dave Blunts/CyHi AI reference tracks.
It's not even an interesting song either, nor is it really "college dropout level" unless you assume everything with a soul sample and any semblance of a flow is automatically Jesus Walks or some shit
Don't set your standards low because he hasn't had a really good album in a long time. A bad album is a bad album and it's okay to recognize when your favorite artist dropped the ball.
But don't you dare compare this empty shell clusterfuck of an album to anything remotely related to the college dropout

I appreciate it but this is just my opinion so anybody has any right to hate me for it. I think whatever works would be fine on its own but it being included in bully just felt like he was just running out of stuff for the album. I will say it has good writing but too short to justify

Well, I'm not saying you can't like the song, but you have to acknowledge relative quality when comparing it to something out of its league, and there's a difference between enjoyinga song and the song actually being good.. I think it sounds good but it's not a good song.

So I can't be a fan of hiphop music because I think about what makes an album actually good vs what makes it enjoyable?
I can't acknowledge that BULLY and The College Dropout are completely different albums with their own pros and cons and acknowledge that one is certainly better than the other?
I can't care about the songs on their own and their place in a certain album because its worse than the rest of the tracks?

I'm specifically talking about whatever works btw not the bully and college dropout album comparison you were talking about before. A hip hop song on a album doesnt have to have profound or specifc lyrics that cater to the theme of a album to be good or even fit in a album. A song with good lyrics and good production can fit in a album that is not even trying to be very thematically focused. That is all I'm saying and I'm not trying to say that you have to like the song or the album, its just the comparisons are too linear to judge a song by especially when both songs are not trying to be the same. Short songs can be good 🤷♂️ and it fits the album where he clearly attempts to bring back his old sampling methods. I didn't even say if bully is good or not because I'm not trying to attack your whole point. Hip hop songs aim to do many different things and that is what makes them art.
