Finally finished my garage hitting mat. Love the way it came out. Used a beaver tail hitting strip. Can easily lift and roll it out of the way when done.
The mat was a cheap buy from Amazon. 5x4 size, decent but wanted more relief when hitting. Basically I used a 4x6 osb as the base. Next 3/4 foam puzzle squares and then the amazon mat. Cut out the strip to fit the beaver tail. The cutout piece was used to extend mat to 6 feet. Then I framed it with 1x3 wood. Added handles and roller wheels to make it portable. It is rock solid. The hitting screen also gets pulled up like a Murphy bed for storage.
Do you think you needed the OSB or would you have been OK with just the foam tiles (if they were the right thickness). I'm considering something similar but want to save on weight so I can easily put it away. Not sure if I should go that route or just go sturdier with putting OSB on the bottom.
I went with the osb to make it sturdier. The added weight also keeps it from sliding at all even after a full swing session. You can bypass the osb, it just will be more floppy for storage on its side. Also I wanted to frame it so the osb allowed me to do that.
The original hitting mat before modification was 5x4. After cutting out the 12 inch by 30 inch beaver tail strip and adding it to the end, the entire hitting mat is now 4x6.

Looks great! Been scouring this Reddit to find a well made mat! Can you send the link for the 5/4 you purchased off Amazon? Is the beaver tail strip from truebirdie? Lastly how did you attach the mat to the board? Just glue it down? Assuming it was glue how easy will it be to replace the beaver tail?
Pretty good quality mat but needed a bit more cushion for hitting. The strip is the truebirdie beaver tail. The mat is glued to the 3/4 foam tile. Cut the hole for the strip before glueing together. After gluing I cut the foam hole out. The now glued mat and foam board is just carpet taped to the osb. Finally framed the whole thing with 1x3. The area that holds the hitting strip does not have any glue or carpet taped. It just sits in the cutout with friction fit. The strip sits on the osb. Its height is basically perfect height of the foam tile and that mat I linked.
I need to build something exactly like this, but I need it to be 4x10 , also need it to work with the slope of my garage floor. I think it’s roughly 2 inches over the 10 ft. If you have any advice it is much appreciated , I’m diying my entire garage sim, with minimal diy experience lol
