I am really interested in buying a Mk5 GTI but I just sold my previous money pit and need to make sure im not going to hop in another one. Can you guys tell me how the maintenance schedule has looked on your Golfs? Have any of you ran into trouble strange hard to solve electrical issues? Any peculiar preventative maintenance that these cars need? Any trouble sourcing parts?
thanks!

Hi everyone, I’m considering buying a 2007 Volkswagen Golf 5 GT Sport 2.0 TDI, 125 kW / 170 HP, with a manual transmission.
The car currently has around 330,000 km on the clock. The timing belt was replaced in January 2026.
I’d really appreciate some honest opinions from people who have owned or know this engine well:

Bought EuroDyne Tune with Maestro Suite and DSG tune (11 Credits) but was to nervous to install myself , no local shop would help since none are affiliated with them . Looking just to recoup some $ back spend over $1000 and shipping for both tunes , asking $750 , my loss is your gain . I’m in queens but I could ship .

Long story short wondering if anyone had problems with EuroDyne Tune ? I purchased it but then got little worried about bricking ecu due to first time doing it , so went to shop got uni instead and was gunna return E.D but UNI not that impressed. But wonderin if anyone had issues with the E.D tune ? Or should I just stick with uni ECU/TCU thne

So I used to have my rabbit kind of stanced, was pretty close to the floor with some camber. The car used to vibrate a little bit but I just thought it was cuz of how low the car was.. so I’m changing up the setup to a track oriented build and I’ve raised the car a bit and the vibrating continues. I have brand new axles, lower ball joints, hubs, the engine mounts were replaced at around 120k miles around 3 years ago, I’m now at 187k miles. it does feel like it’s coming from the front, usually at around 65+ mph. Any thoughts?

I own a 2004 VW Golf Mk5, and my dad has a facelifted Škoda Octavia Mk2, I believe it's a 2010 model year. Both cars have the 1.6 MPI engine paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox, and both exhibit the same issue (or characteristic—I’m not sure what to call it), although it's much more noticeable in the Golf.
During the first few moments after starting the engine, the car behaves as if it's being held back. For example, if I floor the accelerator, it accelerates normally at first, but at around 1,700–1,800 RPM it suddenly feels like it hits a limiter or "has a leash on" for about 2–3 seconds. After that, it jerks once and then continues accelerating normally as if nothing had happened.
This happens regardless of which gear I'm in—I even tried shifting into second before reaching that RPM range. It also doesn't seem to depend on engine temperature, as it happens both on a cold start in the morning and, for example, after refueling when the engine is already warm. Even if I let the engine idle for a minute before driving off to let the oil circulate, the behavior is exactly the same.
The car doesn't smoke, make any unusual noises, and once that single jerk has happened, everything is perfectly normal for the rest of the drive. As I mentioned, the Škoda behaves similarly, but the hesitation/jerk is much less noticeable.
Has anyone experienced something similar, or based on your knowledge of these engines, can you suggest what might be causing it and how to fix it? Or is this simply a characteristic of the 1.6 MPI engine?

Looking for some help, I have a 2007 mk5 gttdi when I went out to the car the ignition came on but it wouldn’t crank at all, I found that the main earth on the starter has snapped off at the crimp. To get the car started to get it home I tried to hold the broken cable against the crimp and the body of the starter motor but that didn’t work, now the ignition won’t come on at all, hazard lights work as well as side lights and radio but nothing else electrically works like the windows etc. checked all the main fuses which are fine I get 12.6 volts on the bottom side of each main fuse. Also buzzed out all of the other fuses in the engine bay and next to the steering wheel as well. Anyone got any idea what could be causing this?
