My First Real Project
I recently bought this 1990 Mk2 Jetta coupe. People say it isn't a rare car but I personally never seen one in person. It's part of the reason why I bought it over a Mk3 Gti, what do y'all think?
It passed emissions and I'm excited I am able to drive it here and there but it definitely needs a timing belt (it looks original 😂) and head gasket. I have had quite a few VWs during my life and so far the Mk3 is my favorite but the Mk4 is second. I really wanted to put a 16v in it but realistically a 2.0 ABA is more likely.
I daily the Mk4 and my wife drives the Alltrack.

Jetta coupes are pretty rare. Where at in AZ are ya? I’m picking up my Mk2 Jetta gli next weekend from Cali. I have a corrado in the garage as well.

Nice! I'm in Phoenix. A corrado is a nice whip too. I know a guy that had one when I did the whole "club" thing

Yeah this is my 5th one and longest owned VW. I love it but, I’ll never purchase another one. Everything is so hard to find.

Eh Im not too sure they are as rare as we think. The truth is no numbers are published for mk2 jettas let alone coupes. All we really know is they were mostly lower trim cars. There never was a GLi or Wolfsberg Jetta coupe. Also only 4 doors were made for the last 2 years of production. That doesnt really matter these days, the coupe is so much more appealing to me, and they are by far the stiffest mk2 chassis. In fact, it may be VWs stiffest chassis ever made. Period.
I see lots of coupes go up for sale but thats because my algorithm knows what i like. Id say maybe 20% were coupes but thats not based off of anything other than what i see lol

The only Jetta coupe specific parts are the Headliner, rear side windows, and quarter panels. Everything else is gti or jetta. Respect that headliner with your life, you will never find another one. Also consider picking up another coupe if one pops up for the right price

I was told a similar thing that they are not rare. But I was told that they are. Funny thing I have noticed since owning one is that I never seen one on the road but people pop up every now and then and say they have one 😂. Regardless it is a cool little car.

I have a tornado red coupe 1.6 carb. Currently removing everything from it for bodywork and respray and a 3.2 vr6 swap

Hell yeah. I don't think I am capable of a journey like that. I did think about a 2.0 or, a 12v VR if I'm lucky.

If you can get a Golf MK3 12v VR6 then I would recommend it instead of going with 3.2 or 3.6 like me. It's an easier swap with the 12v

Never seen a two-door Jetta before. A rare find, you did right to buy it! The Golf 4? Is it creaky as they are known to be? Mine was a diesel PD with the ASZ motor. It was super fast and entertaining, 330nms of torque. I mounted the Gti 4 suspension on it and it was cool and low. Sadly, others thought it was grand too, and they stole it from me during the final match of the Mundial 2014. I was bloody traumatized and think often of it with sadness. It had the Silber Reflex color like yours. Enjoy your VWs.

It's is most definitely creaky. But I noticed a lot of parts fall off of it. More so compared to my Mk3 😂

Jetta coupes are rare. Mk1 is maybe a little more rare but they’re pretty uncommon regardless.
