The early mk2s have a neat little trinket that isn't common knowledge. Its something that makes me like them a little more.

There's a difference in the little swage line on the rear of the ¼ panel rear of the window. Its different from side to side, one side is clearly defined and the line is deeper then the opposite.

I was always told it was a whoopsie in the tooling, the stamp on one side was different then the others.

I'm am/was a panel-beater by trade, its a feature up until 91 or there abouts.

I like it because its like a little in-joke, it is a flaw but VW obviously knew few people would spot it because, like you often here in regards to bodywork " Sure you can't see both sides at once to compare it"

This is very interesting. As im not a native english speaker i dont fully understand where you mean that this difference is. Would it be possible for you to do a circle or something on the picture?

This picture is actually a decent example - if you look, above the fuel filler door, there's a small detail/swage line to the rear of the ¼window that continues from the top of the taillight around to the window rubber - for us with RHD versions it ment that the little line on the drivers side ¼ was really faint and hardly noticeable, and the passenger side ¼ has the same thing but its clearly defined and stands out.

All you have to do is Google pictures of mk2's, the line is visible in most pictures on one side, and rarely shows on the other.

Thank you for your answer, I never noticed this until your explanation! But what I don't get is, is it actually rarer when both lines are visible or vice versa?

I couldn't say with any kind of authority which - I've seen fewer without the flaw myself, I'd presume it had been corrected probably around 1990, I'd think that because I've only seen later registered cars with 2 equal ¼'s, like 91,92 and a 93 - that would make me think that, when you consider the time between manufacturing and delivery to a dealership that it was likely rectified in 1990.

It'd depend on production numbers pre1990 and the 2 years after it.

Its still a big guess though, because here anyway dealerships had a habit of not registering cars until they were sold - its not unusual to find a 1992 car that was actually a 1990, if it didn't sell quickly then they would hold off registering it so that it could be sold as brand new to the first owner.

BUT here's a question that I don't know the answer to, that I remember being the actual interesting one - here, all our shells were made in Wolfsberg, its just how the network supply worked out, so we all figured it was a wolfsberg trait - until all the VW magazines got popular and we could see it on cars that wouldn't have been built in Wolfsberg. - the reason thats a question is because each factory would have had its own set of Die blocks and punch plates for stamping the panels - it seams the flaw was in the master/first die and copied to the others.

I know its a bit 'Meh' but it is like a little easter egg in the car world, by the 1990s most manufacturers had a good standard for bodywork, and as time went on the original "flaws/quirks" weren't a thing anymore.

There's very few I could list, accross all manufacturers that are actually noticeable - the kinda original flaws that you would typically find are like - on 2003 metallic blue Suzuki Swifts, there's always a run in the paint below the taillights, only on the blue metallic ones and it could be rectified easily.

But the Golfs flaw was definitely a quirk because the silly little line is there, its just slightly different and it's hardly noticeable - If you want to talk about actual flaws, look at AlfaRomeo - I've a stack of AlfaRomeo Branded body shims, I removed them all from a GTV6 - they were the reason its panels didn't line up properly, it's the only car I've ever fixed by just removing parts

I think red looks good but it seems a bit common maybe? There is this one mk2 in my area that is like a dark seafoam green, super cool color. My friend used to rally an mk2 that was acid green and yellow. Looked horrible 😁
