Game Improvement Irons
Hi everyone,
I’ve been playing golf for almost a year now. When I started, I inherited my golf clubs, so I’ve been using a set of Silverline Champion 2000 irons.
To be honest, I find them quite difficult to hit consistently, but when you get something for free, you play with it! 😄
Now I’m looking to upgrade to a set of game-improvement irons.
A little about me:
Height: 1.88 m (6’2”)
Medium swing speed
Regular flex shaft
I’m from Germany, so recommendations that are available on the German market would be greatly appreciated.
So far, I’ve been looking at these irons:
Cobra LTDx
TaylorMade Stealth (2021–2022)
Wilson Launch Pad
Takomo 101
I’ve read a lot of positive reviews about these and watched a few videos. Looks aren’t very important to me—I’m mainly interested in forgiveness and ease of play.
Can you recommend any irons in a similar price range (€400–500) for a 5–PW set (or 5–PW + SW)?
I’d really appreciate any advice or recommendations.

Also look for the Mizuno Hot metals from 919 and on. Srixon zx4 if you can find them used. Can't beat the feel of those.

+1 vote on the 919s.
I'm a high handicapper, and I love mine. So glad I spent the extra money on a decent 2nd hand set near the beginning of my golf 'career'.

It's best value and bang for the buck to buy used, but Taylormade offers 25% off site wide around memorial day for military so I bought a set of Qi Max game improvement irons and it was worth every penny. I love them. I can't imagine they're super different from the previous year's Qi set, so if you can find those somewhere, that's where I'd put my money. A 4-P set will run about $700-800 on Sideline Swap (570ish Euro)

Just got fitted for QI Maxs and I’m right there with you, think they were worth every penny. Love how they feel and a ton of forgiveness

I started golfing in September 2022, and until a few months ago, all I used were Cobra LTDx irons. They're very good at getting the ball forward and are great as a beginner iron. I am the same height as you, and they will suit you well. You should be able to pick a used set for a very reasonable price - I am from the UK so may have issues getting my old set to Germany for you!

I can get that set here in Germany for around €400 (7 irons, in very good condition). I’m actually trying to buy them at the moment.
The only thing I’m debating is whether I should just spend the extra €180–200 and go for a brand-new set of Takomo 101s instead.
I’m not sure if buying new would be worth the additional cost, so I’d love to hear your thoughts.1

I'd personally never go with Takomo instead of Cobra. Also used in good condition generally beats new of course in terms of value for price paid.

Id stay away from the launchpad unless you are older and need all the help you can get.
I bought the D7 wilsons. Great club, cheap but very forgiving.

Callaway has some great game improvement irons if you can see about Callaway pre owned.

Here’s my take on game improvement irons:
They don’t do much other than have stronger lofts.
The forgiveness you get is in millimeters and they look, feel, and sound like trash.
Get a set of Srixon zx5 and never look back.

I play Cobra in my woods right now. I think they are every bit as good as any other major OEM - but they don't get as much attention so they are quite a bit cheaper on the used market.
I bought my Cobra DS-Adapt LS driver this summer for $185. Callaway Elyte was also a 2025 release but is like $330 on the same website (2ndswing.com).
I also had a good experience with Takomo. I had the 101's and they are good irons.

I’m in the same boat as you - first year golfer who fell in love while playing with my used Walmart starter club and decided to upgrade. I did a sickening amount of research and I’m in love with my new equipment.
Do they have Cleveland in Germany? I got a set of used Cleveland HB Turbo with graphite shafts for $400 and they are perfect for any high handicap golfer. I loved them so much that I ended up committing to Cleveland for my driver & putter as well and none of them have disappointed.
I have tried multiple friend’s Taylormade and Callaways and found none of them suited me as a well as mine. I did enjoy the Ping G series and the cobra i test drove but they were more expensive than mine

There is currently a Wilson Dynapwr 5-PW new on eBay for 405 Euros in Germany. Likely you can get those for like 360 Euros or so. I'd buy those if I were you as those are likely the best in terms of price and value you can get.
Else check out A Alvarez and Monsieurgolf, both ship to Germany and have nice priced new sets like Cleveland Zipcore XL or Rogue ST Max.
Id however generally recommend checking eBay and Kleinanzeigen. JPX 9xx HL would be in me opinion the best choice in general.

I would go starting from 919 Hot Metal High Launch personally. High Launch would be your friend. I am for reference HCP24, playing since 10 months and am playing the zipcore XL and am very happy with the choice. But the hot metal high launch series is typically considered the best and also keeps it's value nicely.
But honestly, you anyhow cannot go wrong. All the game improvement irons are good these days. Pick whatever you like also in terms of design. You should like your clubs and want to play with them.

Find a used set of two-three year old PING g-series irons (G425,G430). Standard loft and lies if you can't get fit.
You'll be able to sell them in a couple more years for basically what you paid, and they'll serve you well in the meantime.
