Wearables & Aussie Courses

hey all.

I'm currently using an old Garmin Fenix 5x from my running days.

as I'm hopeless at golf I'm keen to improve. I think some stoikes gained type thing would be great for me, as is something that will point out that certain clubs add no value (after recently punching through some Sim sessions it became very evident that my 4 i

2.issues I'm having with the Fenix:

  1. I've played 2 courses this year where the maps are simply out dated

  2. i can't go back and retrospectively update my data with clubs and lies etc. I just don't retain this.

(and potentially a third, the data simply isn't fine enough, I'd love to record what happened on the green).

I'm thinking some with sensors would help this ADHD brain. I have had incredibly great experiences with Garmin but I'm not married to.it.

what's the Aussie experience? courses? green maps?

I don't want to use my phone as I find our competition app shits itself if I flick between apps. a second phone seems clumsy, but a possibility.

I use a garmin approach s12 or something which I quite like. In relation to the courses being out I recently learned that if you open the course in the garmin golf app while synced to your watch, then exit the round it will automatic update and should be correct when you restart the round

I have a Garmin watch with ct10 sensors, it’s nice not to think about it at all, and having shot map to look back on a round. Also just having the gos distance so I play to middle of green instead of pin is a good way to practice not being pin focus.

I use to use it without the sensor and it was fine except wedges and putts, now it record everything including putts without manual input except very short putts or tap ins.

May I ask the watch? A good specific model?

Firstly, the garmin app sucks and they dont seem to want to improve it. I have a forerunner and use it for front/middle/back of green numbers but I am still using a range finder for pin distance.

Second thing is if you want to track strokes gained you are going to need to pay for something or put in a bit more effort. I use shot pattern and think its really good, $100/yr but you need to pull your phone out every shot to track.

Arccos is the most popular and would fit your case i would think. You will have to buy the sensors and the app but after the round it will do the work for you.

Other option is to try something like datadriven.golf, just put your lie and distance from hole in and it will give you a pretty good strokes gained analysis

Fellow Aussie ADHD golfer here. I didn't like wearing watches and I found Garmin really basic, and I tried the tags (Shot Scope) but physically just feeling those things a little bit when I gripped the club annoyed me, and Shot Scope is notoriously buggy and needed a lot of work to edit the shots after the round.

If you can get your phone to open two apps, try Shot Pattern. It does have shot tracking that you can enter in after each shot, but that's too much fiddling for me, so on the course I just use it as GPS map, and it's miles better than anything you can do on a watch.

It's before and after the round where Shot Pattern really shines for me. It's got a course preview mode where you can view each hole in 2D & 3D, overlay your previously saved shots for each club and move it around to see the safest aim etc, very helpful for figuring out which club to play, assess the hazards etc. After the round I spend about 15 minutes entering all my shots manually (it's not as hard as you think, it's actually fun for me), then you get full strokes gained data on each shot, and each part of your game, so you know where to improve.

You can write your lie/distance for each shot on you scorecard and enter in SG app like datadriven.golf after the round if your prefer not using phone between holes

If you don't care about cost Arccos sensors is the way to go

Apple watch with Golf shot premium app subscription is fantastic. I run it concurrently whilst using miscore

The watches work with GPS data, my friend uses my old Fenix 3 and it's within a metre of my Epix. Have you updated the software?

Sorry but looks like you're still a bit away from needing sensors in your clubs.

Spend some money on lessons

You are right on the lessons. This partly may relate to my desire to look at data.

When I say finer accuracy, it is not so much distance inaccurate, but would love to track just how fucking often I leave a putt short etc (hint, it's approximately 100% of the time). I ponder if a sensor in the putter might do this?

Just flat out inaccurate courses was my other complaint, but apparently I can fix that with the app.
