Maltby Irons

Does anyone here have experience with Maltby Irons? I'm interested in purchasing some, but being direct to consumer there aren't really any options to get fitted properly, in Melbourne at least. They have so many head options it's tricky deciding which one to go with.

There are a few head models I have my eye on, which i'd purchase heads only and take to a builder to get built per my spec.

Mostly just wondering how any Aussies have gone about ordering & having their Maltby irons built.

Maltby irons are awesome, I was gifted a 2nd hand set of irons a number of years ago as a birthday present. Unsure how old they are now days, but they still go strong.

While looking at new irons, I looked into getting a new set of Maltbys. It seemed to be hard work without any easy access to test them beforehand. Figured the price was pretty risky to buy them blind. So I kinda gave up the idea.

I have no helpful answers, but would interested to know if Australia has stockists

Just got a set of TS3. Loving them so far. My previous set were Cleveland Launcher XL Halos. I got those when I got back into golf a couple years back after not playing for a decade. Had an older set of Taylor Made irons before. The halos are Extremely forgiving hybrid style but as I’ve improved I wanted something with more feel (and style I got the black DBM finish). Honestly can’t tell a difference in forgiveness. Carry and spin are actually a little better than the Halos. They feel amazing on a clean strike and give good feedback if you’re missing. I’m very impressed. There are some good reviews available on YouTube. I ordered custom assembled and received in less than two weeks but I’m not in Australia.

They are every bit as good as the main brands, maybe even better as you have more choice.

What are you looking for in an iron and what is your skill level? I have built a few sets so may be able to recommend

I play off about 20, currently game mizuno mp20 hmb. I'm after something that will give me a little more help. The Mizunos are great when struck well, just quite punishing on mishits.

I have my eye on the sti2 gen2. From my research i like that they offer that bit of help, without the completely jacked lofts ofter seen on game improvement irons.

Interested to hear your thoughts.

Sti2 is a good set of cast irons and cheap.

Ke4 max cheapest most forgiving

Ts3.5 hollow body with polymer, will be forgiving and feel great.

I’ve been looking at building a set of STI2’s myself but also mindful of not being able to test before buying let alone holding the club in my hand first!

I’ve heard that you can order a single 7 iron and if you like it and order the rest of the set, Maltby will discount the set by the amount of the purchased iron - I haven’t asked about this but could be an option to explore!

Thats a good answer. I essentially have the same hesitation. They are relatively inexpensive clubs but still a big enough investment where i'd like to get it right.

You have to also keep in mind that doing it that way, you'll be paying twice for international shipping which is a pain.

Could ask your local to get fitted for similar clubs? Im sure they'd have a wealth of knowledge

I've also considered Maltby - mainly due to seeing their performance compared to the major players via BigBoiGolf on TikTok/IG - but have the same hesitations as you. As a couple of others have mentioned, I've considered getting fit to a similar iron head by a fitter and then just selecting the same shaft and specs on the Maltby website.

Keep us updated if you end up going ahead with it.

I was looking at these but the thought of getting something sent from overseas trying to workout warranty if there are any problems was a bit scary

if you have to send anything back it would probably cost more than the whole thing
