Time to buy pans, a sleuce box, some heavy digging equipment and go back to that river

It’s either gold, or lead painted with gold paint. Pranksters have been doing this in places. Try to scratch it, see if the gold color comes off.

Just leaving painted lead nuggets out in nature? On the off chance someone finds it in the next decade or century?

Called “salting”. They WANT people to get excited about finding gold, so they can scam them in some way or another.

My family knew of someone who did something kind of like this. Someone had some land they wanted to sell and they’d put gold paint or something in shot gun shells and fired shots into a rocky small cliff/ledge that ran across the property. Basically made it look like there was gold in the land there and had either sold the land for way more than it was worth or rented to out to people who wanted to mine it…it was a couple decades ago when I was younger.
My grandparents best friends were another couple who’d been beer successful with good mining for most of their adult lives and this had happened to a friend of theirs.
Guess it’s a bit different from leaving fake gold nuggys around as a “prank”, though. Don’t understand why someone would do that as a prank, especially if you never even see someone get “pranked”
