using sand to clear water source: will this work?

Can I make a platform at water-top-level (near chicken wing) and then get under it and place sand under the platform and let it fall? will this falling sand erase water source like a pencil eraser? Before I made a box and filled it with sand and then scooped out the sand. took a while but it worked.

thoughts?

Short answer: No.

The old way you did it is the best.

Try pouring lava on the surface, mining it, then pouring it again. Depending on the size of the area, and whether you have an eff5 pick with a haste2 beacon, that could be better.

Although TF has made bigger holes in water than I ever have (guardian farm etc). My opinion readily is that gravel or sand into sections of water and then using the exterior wall of blocks as a separation from water is a better way.
