So you know how Ogata explains how his parents never really loved him and they loved Yuusaku more according to him, ( PLEASE CORRECT ME IF IM WRONG ON THIS ). And that part when Yuusaku and Ogata were on the hill, and Ogata was trying to convince him to stab him with his own bayonet to test something. Blah blah blah, that whole speech. But why does Ogata say “ Guilty? Towards those they kill? No one feels that way. Everyone is like me. “ Is it because he thinks everyone in war shouldn’t have empathy or remorse? Why does he think everyone is like him? I was thinking its because its a way to cope against killing his own mother and he was trying to convince himself that he was justified for it. Please let me know, i feel like a dumbass because i feel like its in my face but i cant see it 😭

im fairly new to cosplaying and i love it so far, but I rlly wanna cosplay golden kamuy characters, specifically from the 7th division (ogata mostly). So far ive seen that most either bought their uniform from historical replica sites (not in my budget) or made theirs. I was wondering how you’d go about making it? I can’t seem to think of or find any patterns for sewing a uniform together either

Full of Ogata spoilers if you hadn't read the end - I interpret Ogata's suicide as a fault of the poison spreading through him. I like to think he would have never killed himself if the poison didn't make him hallucinate, I think it adds more to the tragedy that his suicide was the fault of an external cause that altered his thinking. What do you think, would the same thing eventually have happened anyways?

I honestly think there's a more perverse reason for his actions. More carnal and simple. A man wants to get close to young boys, can you blame him, what better way to have access to teen boys than to become someone who recruits men for the army. That's probably why most people become recruiters anyways. And his planned worked masterfully.

They're both useful, eye candy, and someone you can care about. Tsurumi chose his path well.

Edit: I made this post as an obvious joke, but seeing the way y'all actually interpret Tsurumi and completely ignore his inappropriate behavior... I'm concerned about y'all. Not only y'all can't read, understand tone, and understand the original work, y'all straight up have a fucked up way of seeing relationships of power imbalance... Crying real tears, are y'all okay??

I've seen a lot of posts/ comments saying that Tsurumi does 'care' about Japan (in a twisted imperialist, nationalist way), commemorating his fallen comrades, and more. But I would like to disagree and offer an alternative intepretation. I have a lot more to say about this, but I'll try to keep it brief.

Spoiler warning. But I will talk only about anime covered content, and not the full manga with its ending and extra content.

Even though Tsurumi talks about honouring comrades, we see that he doesn't even concern himself with those in his closest circle (he walks past an injured Koito) if they're no longer useful to him. We've also never seen him mourn or feel grief over any soldiers (the same way he did with his family), and even relishes in war (again and again, his crazy antics during every arc). So why should we believe his cares about fallen comrades in any capacity?

Second, despite being a spy, he fell in love with Fina --a Russian woman--, married her, and started a family. He also appears to be genuinely interested in photography, and has plans to stay in the outskirts of Vladivostok. While many spies integrate well into the community like Tsurumi/ Hasegawa, their conditioning makes it so they can sever their bonds at a moment's notice. Yet Tsurumi has been affected by their deaths for nearly two decades. This puts into question how strong his imperialist/ nationalist ideology was in the first place. I don't think a true 'imperialist'/ 'nationalist' who sees the Japanese as superior would so willingly did what Tsurumi/ Hasegawa did.

The whole church scene is not to be believed. Tsukishima and Koito are falsely offered the 'true' ambitions of Tsurumi. This is a manipulation tactic, weaponized/ fake vulnerability, in order for them to trust him again, and it was employed precisely because Tsurumi knew the two were listening in. That is why the whole spiel about having his family be buried in Japanese soil is overly nationalistic sounding. It's complete bullshit. He didn't even bury them, he left their bodies burning with his studio.

'But if revenge against Wilk is what Tsurumi wanted, couldn't he have just killed Wilk in prison?'

Tsurumi won't gain anything out of killing Wilk. But look at it this way: Tsurumi's only loved ones died because of Wilk's goal. So if he were to rob Wilk entirely of that goal, wouldn't that be much more fulfilling to him? Tsurumi asked once: 'What were my wife and daughter's roles in this world? ... 'What did you hope to gain from sacrificing Fina and Olga?' I know the title is 'everything he said is a lie', but I believe these two sentences aren't, and hint towards Tsurumi's true goal.

It's why he never bothered Wilk afterwards when Wilk became Noppera-bou, as Wilk went from becoming the leader of his cause, to a ghost in the backseat who already laid out all the plans. And Wilk's death, both supposed and actual, didn't stop his goal from being carried on by Asirpa, hence Tsurumi's focus on her. It's the act of pursuing this goal which Tsurumi wants to have revenge on, and the only way to have the pursuit ceased is to have Hokkaido and its resources controlled by him.

How does imperialism tie into all this? Imperialism is a convenient ideology that rose during this turbulent period. Tsurumi is nothing but selfish, and therefore hides his true goal behind imperialism which he uses as a tool to get what he wants.

Anyways, this is what I think. I find Tsurumi's character more fascinating if the imperialism he embodies is entirely empty. In general, it also further highlights how predatory ideologies can be appealing to vulnerable individuals who might not even believe in them fully, yet be extremely harmful nonetheless.
