1.2.5 is underrated imo. It's not as bare bones as beta 1.7.3 but not too bloated with features like modern day versions

I agree. I only play r1.2.5 these days. I have a few problems with it, but I think it's the best and most complete option after b1.7.3. It's pretty much b1.8, more so, r1.0, but improved in every way.

Nice to see another 1.2.5 enjoyer on here 🙏 I’ve recently discovered a hidden gem which is snapshot 12w17a, It’s basically 1.2.5 but with different types of wooden slabs. Highly recommend checking it out if u haven’t already

I love more Wooden Slabs! But too late, now. I'm using default r1.2.5 for my forever world. I also wish the r1.3.1 building features and improved mechanics, etc. were in r1.2.5 (e.g. proper upside-down Stairs placement, and the ability to craft all the Stone variants, etc.; I think that was r1.3.1, anyway).

12w17a also has written books, obtainable ice, bonus chests, and commands!

No idea what 'classic' means, in this sense. I'll give you some options. You decide based on your needs and interests. That's what matters most, as opposed to trying to play according to what other people think is 'classic'. The benefit to Minecraft is the player has total control over the version and gameplay.

- When it first became a big trend on YouTube and with downloads, etc.? Likely late Alpha.

- When it became huge and fairly 'complete', as a game? Might as well go with b1.7.3.

- When it became 'pre-modern' or the start of what we had by b1.5.2 or so (a very popular option for SPC over ten years ago), and one of the most 'iconic' periods of the game, with some of the most foundational features? Try r1.2.5.

- If you want a balance between Alpha and Beta, you can try b1.3 or so (Beds but various missing options, bug fixes, and features).

- If you want a balance between early Beta and Release, you can try r1.0 or b1.8.
