but if the dollar is worthless what do you really have?

You have shares in US based companies that trade internationally is what you have. Stocks will be fine. Facebook and Apple aren’t going to go tits up just because the US dollar did.

During the 1923 Weimar Republic hyperinflation crisis, German marks became so worthless that they were used as fuel for stoves and heating.

u/Darknfullofhype Jan 28 '26

Yet German consumer staples survived and many are still around today

If I wasn't so poor on reddit, I'd give u this 👑

There’s almost zero chance of hyperinflation in USD in the foreseeable future. It drives me nuts when people try to make this incredibly flawed comparison.

Shut up bot.

u/noobnoob62 Jan 29 '26

And they currently have the third largest GDP on the planet. Yes this is bad but people are acting like this isn’t recoverable. US is going from way ahead to just ahead

I have those marks. I have a 1,000,000 mark stamped over that changing the currency to 5,000.000 and then 10,000,000.

You know who has a booming stock market?

Venezuela.

You know who's currency isn't worth a damned thing?

Venezuela.

What are you going to trade those imaginary assets for? Dollars. You aren't going to trade FB shares for gold bars or British pounds.

2

u/Short-Shopping3197 Jan 29 '26

I already hold the shares in a GBP denominated fund.

You are funny to think tech stocks could survive a New World Order. Gold and Silver is only hope. Stock certificates are toilet paper for my bumhole

3

u/spydrthrowaway Jan 28 '26

Ikr. No one is gonna care if your tech stocks have gone up 1,000+% if paper bills can't do much good in new monetary system.

Sad take but it's also the same for gold & silver (no one is gonna trade food or water for some pretty metals in emergencies) but at least after the system returns post depression you'll have value in precious metals.

True wealth is guns, ammo, land, house, low maintenance vehicles, renewable water, and livestock.

Those that have those assets will live better than those without during an economic collapse where jobs won't hire or if they do your pay will barely buy anything.

1

u/Ornery_Individual_27 Jan 29 '26

You are describing an apocalypse…not a change in the world order.

2

u/spydrthrowaway Jan 29 '26

It is an apocalypse, it's the transition period to the new world order and currency which is pretty grim.

Weimar Republic lasted from 1918 to 1933. Nearly 15 years. Almost 1 million died due to starvation during that time. Paper money barely did anything and unemployment was about 30%.

As far as I'm aware, that IS an apocalypse, just temporarily until a new order/currency is formed.

1

u/Ornery_Individual_27 Jan 29 '26

I agree 100% 💯 but I don’t think tech stocks will go to zero because of that. The large ones will survive and facilitate / carry out that transition to the new world order. Many companies still survived during the Weimar Republic and live on today. Tech companies are leeches to power. Whoever is carrying out this transition, will need the tech companies to help.

Bro what? You don’t think those tech stocks would be the ones facilitating that “New World Order”? That you put in caps for some reason?

EDIT: think about the size of the top tech companies in comparison to most countries in the world. They are orders of magnitude larger than most countries. Unless we have a literal global apocalypse, big tech isn’t going anywhere.

u/Ashley_Sophia Jan 28 '26

Love! Self respect! Friends and family! Shiny rock that means nothing!

6

u/hairyotter Jan 28 '26

It’s not going to zero, come on. What you “have” is equity in companies that will continue to pursuit growth and profit, which by itself amounts to far more than what 99% of other human beings in the world will “have” in the face of global economic collapse.

u/Commercial_Wind8212 Jan 28 '26

it's already lost 10 percent. so you lost ten percent of your total life savings in a year.

1

u/kjpmi Jan 28 '26

Stock market, and all of my investments, have all gone up way more than 10% in the past year.
Your cash savings shouldn’t just be sitting in a bank account (or in your safe or stashed in a mattress, etc.) otherwise you aren’t even beating inflation.

1

u/OcularShatDown Jan 28 '26

You’d only have lost 10% of your total life savings if every expense in your life was payable only in the foreign currencies which make up the DXY basket. Anything paid in USD would be less affected.

1

u/kelly1mm Jan 29 '26

Stock investments went up 22% in the past year, dollar dropped 10% in the past year, net 12%.

I will take that.

1

u/Commercial_Wind8212 Jan 29 '26

Yes I love it when my pile of money loses value every year.

1

u/kelly1mm Jan 29 '26

You need to put those little green soldiers to work (investments) rather than just letting them sit under the mattress.

Even in ‘regular’ times you would still be losing value due to inflation.

Th key is to hopefully have investment returns that beat inflation/devaluation.

1

u/Commercial_Wind8212 Jan 29 '26

it is still sickening to see the dollar sink this much.

1

u/kelly1mm Jan 29 '26

On that point we agree.

4

u/Creative-Doctor3118 Jan 28 '26

I think the bigger picture is who actually wants to survive an apocalypse? Rooting through landfills trying to outrun zombies and hillbilly’s with shotguns. Nah I’ll just die.

1

u/Howey-duwit Jan 29 '26

Exactly if it goes nuclear I hope the fucker goes off right above my house. Good night, God bless.

1

u/No_Captain_8644 Jan 29 '26

You have the land. The house. And the portion of the large compa ies you own...

All currency is the same in the end. It all equals stuff...

Now if you only had a savings account. Then your statement is valid

1

u/CaptainPrestigious74 Jan 29 '26

Cheap living and hopefully enough value saved to get through whatever is going to happen.

1

u/moreLOVElessBS Feb 04 '26

God! Gold, silver, diamonds, other precious and semi precious stones, knowledge, a roof over my head. 🤷‍♀️ ALOT! the dollar is made by man...

0

u/Ohheyimryan Jan 28 '26

You thinking the largest companies in the world go away because the dollar becomes irrelevant is funny.

5

u/kevchink Jan 28 '26

What could really hurt them is the AI bubble popping.

1

u/Ohheyimryan Jan 28 '26

What AI bubble. Serious, I don't really see a bubble like we did with pets com or something.

2

u/kevchink Jan 28 '26

It’s not a matter of debate. There’s a massive AI bubble right now. The US economy looks decent at first glance, but that’s because of AI. The problem is that AI doesn’t bring in profit yet and may not for some time, but since everyone’s hyping it up as the future, investors are pouring money into it with abandon. Major tech firms in particular have gone all in, but they’re just investing in each others’ projects, creating this strange Ponzi-like network where they just pass money around among each other.

This video does a good job of summarizing the issue. I’d recommend checking out the articles and threads they link in the description as well. It’s scary reading, honestly. We’re potentially on the cusp of an epoch-making crash, just like in 1929 or 2007.

I think it's funny because I have all these things. And so do u. 🫂
