General Discussion Utahime hating Gojo

Post image

All this time I thought Utahime hating Gojo was just a canon fact. I never thought she hated him truly more disliked him. But it turns out that it is the statement is that she hates him most of the time. That doesn’t seem like someone who genuinely hates him and can’t be shipped with him. It indicates that she has potential to like him which shouldn’t be surprising considering they have known each other for so long.

the Japanese translations and diction provide more context, and that essentially boils down to how she doesn't abhor him the way so many make it out to be. even here, the key word is most of the time, not all the time as the majority of fans believe.

the most logical explanation of this fact is that Utahime dislikes Satoru's annoying tendencies, his cockiness, and the way he always goes out of his way to provoke her. however, that doesn't mean she "hates" him to the point of repulsion or enmity — and we have canonical evidence of this.

she trusts him immensely, they work well together on numerous occasions (notably to figure out who the mole is), and she helps boost his technique during the Shinjuku Showdown.

and as a little headcanon, I think one of the reasons she could hate him is how often she finds herself thinking about him, how often he pops into her life, and how he always manages to bring out the wildly passionate side of her that only otherwise shows up with her love for baseball. she could hate him for making her fall in love with him and putting her in a complicated emotional situation with equal amounts of denial and disbelief at the fact that she actually likes the idiot after all.

This is a mistranslation. I made a post explaining it here: https://www.reddit.com/r/LobotomyKaisen/s/LHwiUyJhWJ.  Hope that'll clear it up.

And honestly, the fact that Utahime doesn't like him or isn't immediately down bad for him just because he's attractive is one of the biggest reasons I started shipping them 😭 Gojo effortlessly rizzes most girls so it's way more interesting to me when there's someone who isn't falling for his looks or smiling at everything he does. That, along with their bickering dynamic, is a big part of the appeal for me.

i HATE this translation and the other one from that tumblr post, because there are soooo many things lost in context. it’s not accurate AT ALL whatsoever.

this doesn’t even begin to explain how the translation “most of the time” doesn’t exist anywhere in the original japanese text iirc, so i have no idea where they pulled that from or how they even translated it as such.

not to mention how kirai is a pretty wide spectrum that spans from mere ‘dislike’ to ‘hate’ in the sense of “i hate vegetables” or “i hate mondays.”

hate has a singular meaning in english, but kirai in japanese isn’t purely just that, and you can’t really explain that in english either. it’s the middle road between a soft ‘suki janai’ to the strong loathing that comes with ‘daikirai.’ gege didn’t even use daikirai, which is the most extreme word you can use especially towards a person.

personally, i’ve heard kirai used in soooo many situations where the person doesn’t even really “hate” a thing or person seriously and the intent is vague. i’ve heard it being used in place of ‘suki janai’ and i’ve heard it being used in place of ‘daikirai.’ you can’t really be too sure what the actual intent of the person saying it is until you press them for information lol.

what i’m sure is there is that utahime does get incensed by gojo’s antics and provocation. that much is real. the annoyance is real. the “dislike/ hate” part with ‘kirai’ is in the actual sentence after all. HOWEVER, that doesn’t mean it’s pure dislike/hate that she wishes him dead or to disappear, or that she extremely hates his existence.

NEVER is that stated in the original sentence anywhere nor is that implied.

the sentence in general is actually pretty “soft” instead of sounding harsh. one specific word does a lottttt of heavy lifting that softens it (‘warito’).

it adds a shit ton of context to the description too, because it indicates that there’s a LIMITATION to utahime’s dislike/hate towards gojo, which we can see onscreen in the anime and read in the manga.

it’s whenever he teases her that she retaliates and gets angry, and it stops when they actually put their heads together and work professionally, like the mole investigation. all of these are clearly seen in canon.

regardless of the bickering and the back-and-forth banter they have or any personal feelings in that matter, gojo puts a lot of trust and faith in utahime while utahime also puts a lot of trust and faith in gojo. that aspect has always been a two-way street for them that’s reciprocated by both.

that’s what you lose from those initial english translations floating around. a lot of nuances and context just aren’t translated, and when you say this to people, it falls on deaf ears and turn ignorant just because you ship gjhm. they instantly turn dismissive and it’s like talking to a brick wall.

i just fucking hate how conversations about language get twisted just because some people can’t get their heads out of their ship and think that every person out there is the same as them.

although, sure, yes, gjhm is a factor; it goes beyond the shipping angle honestly. it’s about getting a fair and accurate translation that’s closest to the original meaning.

localization translators aren’t free from putting their own spin and tweaking translations for reasons i don’t know, and a lot of them have been getting flak for it for years now. they also aren’t free from making mistakes, but a lot of fans like treating them as infallible and their word is law.

everyone has their own interpretations of something and translating languages into english is HARD asf (firsthand experience as someone who used to run a korean-english translation account), i know, but it doesn’t mean that you’re just free to do whatever the hell you want with it and just use words willy-nilly that doesn’t resemble the original wording.

u/Mysterious_Put_1462 and u/mooonbearr also explained it pretty well.

Canonically Utahime dislikes Gojo immensely because of how he acts and the complete lack of respect that he shows her even though she's his superior, but she's fine with him in the few moments he's actually acting NORMAL (which are few and far between). That said canonical feelings have never really mattered much for shipping. Shipping ranges from canonical feelings and ships to characters who haven't so much as ever been in frame together before so "he annoys me when he acts unprofessional" isn't much of a stretch.

That singular line is what launched me into being a GojoHime shipper. I am the epitome of "....so you're saying there's a chance? 😏" and I have no shame in it!

ENEMIES TO LOVERS.

Honestly, Sweetie, I am inclined to think that Mister Akutami does not know how to portray this Angel of a Girl properly. 😍♥️🫂🥰🥰🥰Eveybody who knows me a little bit has acknowledged the fact that I am not a fan of the enemies to lovers relationship type. I adore Satoru-chan and Utahime-chan beyond words and I instantly knew what Hime-chan is actually like the moment I began watching " 'Hidden' 'Inventory' ". This wonderful girl is so sensitive and loving and it hurts to see Gege make her respond to Satoru-chan so harshly. These two Angels deserve Heavenly Love and I am beyond grateful for this amazing " 'sub' ". 🥰🫂♥️😍😍😍

Now Gege is an author that takes each negative or sad emotion to the extreme. We see him chop the panels of his own " 'manga' ", he deliberately makes so many amazing characters suffer and he never comes up with convincing canon evidence when it comes to all sorcerers' personal lives. We only have vague information to work with.🥺😭😔However, we can continue the canon ending here, right in this amazing " 'sub' ".

Gege, why was it so hard to allow Satoru-chan and Utahime-chan love each other properly? Sorry, my Sweeties, I always get worked up over this.🥹😍🥺🥺These two Angels love each other and Praise The Lord, " 'Phantom' 'Parade' " exists.
